I know this has probably done to death and beyond but I'm lookin for a newer car than I have(98 mk3 Golf 1000% reliable).I don't do big mileage but lookin for something reasonably economical my list so far is -
    1. an 04 golf 1.4 (with around 50k miles)
    2. an 04 golf 1.4 s fsi (with 60kmiles)
    3. an 04 octavia 1.4 (with 40k miles)
    4. an 07 corolla 1.4 (with 110k-totally mint f.s.h. ex driving school car meticulisly maintained with new clutch and shocks)owned by a good friend.
I love the golfs but the oct. is bigger and the corolla I know is spot on but mileage is a bit on the high side. Very confused!!
Can anybody help on this one all comments/opinions welcome

Most economical thing to do is stick with your current car. If it's running fine, why not try and find a different interior to swap with it, or a new drivers seat. It's the little things that you can do that will stop your from being bored with it. Dropping a few k's on a car when your current one works, especially a Mk3 golf (I like them in particular), is a false economy.

Having said that, I'd go with the Carolla, if you do little milage, then when you sell it, it will look average when you sell it and you won't lose as much in the end, I would guess. :)

Yeah should have said the old golf has 150k on and is nearly dead (been totally reliable since I got it 10 yrs ago) so I feel a change is due...

Mine, the mk4 1.4 has over 150,000 and it's still going strong to be fair even though it needs a new EGR valve:( found out on friday when it was scanned for something else. I presume it's just so dirty it needs replacing but it's still reliable and has yet to leave me stranded.

What exactly was the fault? The pipe from the egr valve to the throttle body is prone to clogging up leading to an 'insufficient flow' fault for the egr valve.

Apologies for straying off topic here for a sec,

Hi Nissan Doc yes code : P0401, "Insufficent flow", I know the pipe Your talking about. I never thought about checking it but I'll pop it off and have a good look around. Those EGR valves are expensive yokes indeed.

Thanks, I really appreciate the advice ;)
