I have been rifle shooting for a while and i always use ballistic tip rounds and am happy with them. they are a bit dearer then other rounds but i just want to know what fellows opinons are on hollow point, full metal jacket, soft point etc especially what damage they do at 100yrd and 200 yrd range on rabbits and foxes. i use a .22 magnumm and .223 which i have just got recently.

any of the other rounds will do what ya want them to do
except the FMJ s ,i wouldn use them on any animal

i find the ballistic tips more accurate on longer ranges

you can use all of them apart from fmjs as they are to likely to pass clean through a fox or rabbit.

Same as Enda really, I used to shoot a lot of American Eagle which had hollow points. Used to make an acceptable mess of foxes they hit. Can't remember if I've used soft points, I suspect I may have used one box but don't remember now to be honest. Out of them all I find the BT's the best, particularly those that don't exit the fox.

Soft points would be a bit slower expanding compared to the ballistic tips plus there's a bigger chance of the tips being damaged from sliding over the rifle's feeding ramp into the chamber.

I use the pointed soft point(core lokt) they mushroom well I felt I never needed to try anything else. I am curious to try the ballistic's tho. Would I need to be cautious bout getting an exit wound on heart and lung shot as exit wound?? would be important for good blood trail for dog. For Fallow.

I have only been shooting foxes for about two years now & would not have as much experience as some of the other lads on here. But for what it's worth when I got my rifle first I only used hollow points, but as I have gained more experience & know my capabilities, find the bts are worth the extra few €s for the few shots I take

Agree with you on the PSP's but did use BT's for 2 or 3 seasons. Shoot a 270 Win. Worked very well, accurate and good penetration on mostly reds and a few sika. Always take heart/lung shots none took more than a few steps if any so never actually had to follow a trail. Always an exit wound with the sika, only with relatively close ranges, 100 yards or less with the reds, longer shots I recovered a few under the skin on the far side.

This fella was shot last night at about 70 yards with a hornady ballistic tipped .17hmr bullet.
made absolute bits of his spine. could fold him over in a clean half with no bother. when the bullet hit him he tumbled over. Didnt get to witness the damage on a fox yet.

I ll stick to the PsP's. Better the devil ya no. Im shooting with the .243 Maybe when I feel more confident for the neck shots ill change over to BT Have took the occasional neck shot would'n feel 100% safe just yet.
