Portuguese athlete Sara Moreira has been suspended by the IAAF after her two samples from Daegu came back positive for a prohibitive substance.

Of course she's no stranger to Irish competitors, Mary Cullen and Fionnula Briton. Lots of various permutations about how this impacts on Irish athletes. If I am correct, she took silver ahead of Mary Cullen at the European Indoors in 2009, with Mary taking the bronze. She also was on that Portuguese cc team that has swept to team medals over the last few year, with Ireland regulated to 4th place in 2009 in Dublin at Euro Cross.

It's a really disappointing find, but at least she is caught!

Here is a list of her accolades on Wikipedia, but now it comes with a nice big 'Doping Charge' in bold print at the end!

Methylhexaneamine should be taken off the banned list.

I'm not sure what this has to do with races run by Irish athletes in 2009.

Obviously untrue, since athletes have to start taking drugs some time. Plus, you can't retrospectively state that. Thirdly, consistency would demand that you say that of negative tests, but this leads to a contradiction.

Fourthly, methylhexaneamine is in a lot of supplements whose ingredients vary from place to place.

This might explain the positive but doesn't excuse it. It's all the more reason to avoid completely unnecessary supplements anyway. She isn't exactly the first to test positive in this way (if that's how it happened)...

It's sad but no pot crying over spilt milk.
heard a story the other day about a guy who won in the world championships taking a drug overdose 2 months before the worlds.
    Drugs is everywhere in athletics.

It is a positive when cheats are caught and we should be happy that this lady will face a ban. I would strongly argue tht it is not the list of performance enhancing drugs that needs to nbe adjusted, it is the length of the ban imposed. Two years out of competition is not enough of a deterrant for some when weighed up against the chances of success in world championships and olympic games.

With regard to taking a product off the banned substance list for the reasons outlined above is rediculous. Lets be very clear. elite athletes check everything that they take. In a country like Portugal they have access to advice and a medical support system in place to ensure that they take no chances. I have no sympathy for cheats and welcome a ban for her. It is a pity, she was a fine athlete and I enjoyed watching her run over the past few years but the rules are there in black and white for all.

    Please elaborate. Very vague indeed.

And no, drugs are not "everywhere". It's the minority that give all the good guys a bad name.

Or its the minority that are been caught, tests are always following the drugs. Drugs are everywhere at at the moment the rules are such that its not too much of a ban if your caught. In my books 2 years would not be enough, but if you have tested positive serverd your ban its no difference then a false start in 100m.. rules are just rules.
