This is one of the options being considered by the Gov in their review of Shannon and Cork airports. According to Leo Varadkar there is a particular problem (?) with Shannon which stands to lose €8m this year. These loss's would normally have been absorbed by the DAA through their profits at Dublin. However due to the downturn this is now not possible. While the assets of the airport remain the property of the DAA a private operator would run the airport on a concession basis.
This report appeared in the Irish Examiner (5/11), and is available online.

Shanon Airport's future will see it taken over by local public service sector authorities in the midwest region according to Clare Co Co which has made a pitch for public sector mamnagment of the airport to Booz and Co airport consultants. Coinciding with this The mayor of Cork Co Co Cllr Tim Lombard(FG) said he will be lodging a submission to Booz calling for local autonomy for Cork Airport.
He said, local authorities in the area should have a role in managing the airport. That is the European model, but it is very important that the airport under local managment is not saddled with the €100 million debt that it has.
