    Hi Guys
As the title says so apoligies firstly.
Family member giving me a used PS2 for the kids, 7 and 4. for christmas.
Can you stil get games for this.?
Am I better off trading it in for a PS3 or a Wii, it appears to me that PS2/3 has more games for older kids??
What do ye think, I wont be playing it (ie dont need it for adult games) just for the kids.
Any advice appreciated, am sort of thinking of keeping the PS2 and getting a Wii for the 4 year old perhaps a cheap second hand one should save on them squabbling.
    Thanks

There are plenty of games for kids on the PS2, they would be a lot cheaper too as its an old console. They are still making games for it because the games are not compatible on the PS3. I don't know how much you would get for it on trade in. You can buy them new for under €100 AFAIR.

The Wii is good craic though. It would suit kids better with the games. Its really a money situation, if you can afford a wii, get one, but the PS2 would do grand to keep them entertained.

You certainly can still get games for the PS2, many new sports games and the like are released for it every year. It also has the most extensive and varied back-catalog of any system, so it isn't limited to just mature games.

The Sly Racoon series, the Ratchet and Clank games, Okami - I'm sure other posters can give you even more games- these are all top quality, child-suitable games. There is also a vast amount of very simple, very easy games that might be better for a 4 year-old. The best thing about the PS2 is that the games, and the gear (such as the EyeToy, which would be another child-friendly device for the system) are dirt cheap now, so if they lose interest, or break a game etc. it's not a huge waste of money. You'll get game collections on eBay for amazing prices.

You would get very little for trading it in, and I don't think a PS3 would be useful to children of that age. The Wii might seem like the console of the day, but the games are still expensive, perhaps more child-centric, but still lacking in the variety of the PS2.

I think a PS2 is the perfect console for children, and for parents, because it's really a great, inexpensive option for gaming now.

Just checked adverts.ie for you OP.

Would this be of use to you?

    http://www.adverts.ie/for-sale/q_ps2/sortby_best_match-desc/

Few sellers selling consoles/games. I know you don't need the console but some sellers might be able to do you a deal with some of the games perhaps.

    Hope that helps.

EDIT: For kids aged 7 and 4, this is the perfect console for them at this age and I wouldn't recommend upgrading to a PS3 due to the cost of the console.

Get the xbox and the kinect that way both of you can play it.
The kinect is better than the wii
    ive always hated the wii
With kinnect you dont even need controller and the new features coming in for it are brilliant

The 150 euro camera you need would suggest differently.

The wii is a piece a crap it doesnt even copy what you do so the kinect is worth its price u could pick one up for 80 quid 2nd hand.

No, it isn't. There are many, many more worthwhile Wii games than there are Kinect. I'd consider this cold, hard fact rather than opinion.

Anyway, this is the Playstation forum, so back on topic please. Format arguments are only cause for headache.

still loads of cheap ps2 games available, theres nearly 10 years worth of catalogue titles around so ebay and adverts and 2nd hand shops are your friend.

PS2 is one of the best consoles ever made and still very relevant, only reason i don't have one is because i've a PS3 that can play PS2 games.

Games are very cheap and can be picked up in used sections often in 3 for 2 offers where you can get 3 game for a tenner. Charity shops are also jam packed with games for a euro or 2.

Kids at 7 and 4 will be well able to figure out how to use it too. No worries and to be honest the money you would get for trading to a bigger console wouldn't be worth it at this stage of their life.

I think if you're talking about a 7 and 4 year old, a Wii would be a better option. The controls and more intuitive for them, there's an excellant range of games aimed at children and games are still widely available in high street stores.

Get them a wii, their so cheap, you can pick one up for practically nothing.

The PS2 also plays DVD's, I hung on to mine for that very reason. Smyth's have loads of second hand pre-played games for next to nothing, in fairness you probably won't get a whole lot in trade in value so another reason for hanging on to it.

I'll be completely honest with you here, the kids will love a Wii particularly at their ages. Leave the Wii in the sitting room/main room as you will play along with them :o and it really is fun for all the family. Set up the PS2 in one of their bedrooms for games and watching DVD's.

There are some really good deals out there so if you can buy new, and if I might be so bold as to recommend Lego Star Wars as a must buy game you'll they'll get hours of fun from it.

Use the Wii OP, use the Wii :D

    There's a few misconceptions here.

    - I wouldn't base your console decision on your kids age, all consoles have a wide range available and in truth most of the top kid focused games will wind up multi-format. (Disney/Nickelodeon/ that kind of thing).

    - Never trade in a console to a video game store, you might as well flush it down the toilet because all you'll get is pennies for it. When selling anything ebay is almost always the best choice.

    - Don't assume a newer console is an upgrade just because it's newer. Many people would view trading in a PS2 for a PS3 as a downgrade in library size and gaming quality particularly if you haven't used it very much.

I'd find out what games your kids are interested in fist and foremost and pick the console most suited off that. Picking a console first and games for it second is doing it backwards. If you're keeping your PS2 I'd recommend ebay, you can get virtually anything from a massive library dirt cheap, high street shops aren't going to stock decent games for it anymore. Anything they do have are probably poor quality trade ins they've had for years that they've been unable to sell. Trust me the good stuff will be long gone from the shelves, check gamerankings.com for meta-reviews on your chosen console (it'll basically give you a shortlist of the very best games) and grab those off ebay.

Gamestop still have a healthy stock of second hand PS2 games, plenty of kids ones too.

Best bet might be Adverts.ie you'll get plenty of kids games on there for next to nothing.

Best games for your youngest would be the disney ones or racing games because his hands would be to small for the joypad with games that use a more complicated button configuration, the 7 yr old should be grand whatever

FIFA12 is a good one too as you can change the configuration just to use two buttons, ideal for small kids
