I'm 99.99% sure you have immobileiser.

Generally speaking it's a device which prevents engine from starting, unless it can read the code from your key. So even if someone will short circuit the wires to start the car, engine wouldn't start, because your key with code wouldn't be present.

A jap import jazz may not have an immobiliser. If it's originally an Irish or UK Jazz then you have one.

Thanks both of you for your replies. How can I see if it's originally an Irish or UK Jazz? According to the certificate of ownership the first owner of it bought it in the ROI in 2003. Is that enough to go on?
