Russian River Crossing

    I found this Vid of the Russian Military crossing a river, a likely scenerio for fighting in Russia. Granted they have no opposition but interesting to see T90s in full snorkel gear drive across the river bottom. Say the tank crews needed to change their underpants after! :D What large scale scenerio does the Irish Army Practice?

    Glad to see Russia has gained some capability following the dreadful period of the 1990s with them being completely underfunded.

    Sod that, wouldn't like to sit inside one of those BTR 80's or BMP 2's with all those doors and hatches for water to come in!

    As well as that, if the T90 starts to fill with water, there's very little chance of escape. At least, Western tanks (Leopard, Chally) use hatch snorkels that are wide enough to use as an escape hatch.

    Incidentally, it was the practise in the Irish Army to test Panhards for wading ability in a pool in the Curragh. It wasn't unknown to find out how bad the door seals were, the hard way.

    Why aren't they showing the SU-24/25s dropping bombs?:confused:

    I suspect that a lot of the explosions are simply charges placed by engineers, rather than airdropped or land fired weapons, simply to save money.

    I'm not aware of any pools in the Curragh but the Panhards were floated on occasion in Blessington Lake. The safety boats would often rise the waves which would often give the driver in the open hatch a good wetting. It was also videoed - although looking at it would not inspire you.

    But in fairness to the old Panhard, at least it had capability to cross a river. It's a long way from the effort shown above mind! Moving large forces is just so impressive.

    Nice Vid, its interesting to see that the Russians are still persisting with amphibious and snorkeling vehicles. NATO stopped investment into these vehicles as the currents of the majority of German rivers were to strong for them and the banks to steep. NATO relied on specialist amphibious "rigs" that it would use for river crossings and could also be bridged.

    If you notice on the video that the river banks were very well prepared and almost flat entry and exit points. I dont think Russia has any vehicle that could cross the river and prepare the banks ready for an assault.

    The British had the CET (Combat Engineer Tractor) which I had the pleasure of commanding for a couple of years that was amphibious and could prepare the river banks and use a rocket propelled anchor and winch to pull itself out of the river. In practice though it would fail 50% of the time to exit the river and would need to be rescued by the safety boats.

    @amq, there was a feature on the Panhards, years ago, on RTE, and it showed the Panhard M3s being driven into and out of a large, ramped concrete pool, deep enough for the cars to have to wade, which was said to be in the Curragh.
    @krissovo, it wasn't unknown for the Russians, in Soviet days, to prepare paved roadways under semi-fordable rivers before allowing cameras anywhere near the scene.

    @Stovepipe:

    I looked into that with my best Miss Marple hat on. Apparently, what RTE showed was not the Curragh, it was Blessington. The concrete ramp you saw is at a narrow point of the lake near Russborough House.. The seals would be fitted in the Curragh and the cars brought down to be floated by entering at that ramp. LOL:)
