BMW E60 drivers..Don't carry liquids in your boot!

This is a new one to me. Apparently there are a number of electronic modules stored at the bottom of the E60 5 series spare wheel well. Any spillages in the boot will ,naturally, find it's way to these leaving them destroyed!:eek:
Anyone any other info on this? Are the modules coded to the car ?
This Service Information bulletin supersedes SI B61 13 06 dated February 2009.
    designates changes to this revision
    SUBJECT
Various Electrical Problems Caused by Water Ingress
    MODEL
    E60 (5 Series)
    SITUATION
Water ingress into the luggage compartment may cause various electrical problems or faults associated with the MPM (Micro Power Module); PDC (Park Distance Control); M-ASK (Multi-Audio System Controller); CCC (Car Communication Computer); CID (Control Information Display); TCU (Telematics Control Unit); LOGIC-7 (Top Hi-Fi); RDC (Tire Pressure Monitor) or SDARS (Satellite Radio Receiver) control modules. In most cases, the water collects in the spare wheel recess.

Dunno about the E61. I only heard about this issue today after some lad managed to spill a gallon of water in his boot.
Has this happened to any boardsies? I'm wondering if the modules can be swapped out from a scrapped car...or will they need to be coded to the car too?

    yeah...

for anyone with one of these - all the cables come out in 1 loom from the wheel hole, if you lift up that tray and put the lot inside a black bin bag, sit it back down and cable tie the top of the bag at the highest point out of the wheel holder this will be atleast some safeguard for all those systems , if you wanted to be really careful about it you could use a circular basin and build a sealed lid for it , then add a drain hole/plug to your car but id say a bin bag would do perfectly for those 'just incase' scenarios

You'd think they'd have put in a plastic tray to cover all that.

a bit of polystyrene goes on top of it, youd need an inch or so of water before any of it would get to the electronics but in that confined space anything more than 500ml would do it

Wait a minute. Put vulnerable electronics in a place where liquid is guaranteed to collect eventually? That's not accidental imo.

Wouldn't find this in a Nissan...

I sense there's more "Mwuhahaha"ing than facepalming going on at BMW HQ ;)
Possibly while sitting in a highbacked swivel armchair and stroking a white cat.

Ya wouldn't find it in a Lada either!

Happened to my brother one stormy wet night, he accidently pressed the button to open boot and you can guess the rest. Went out next morning to the boot soaking wet and a dead car! Many hundreds later he got it going again!

    Stupid design!

Yes, I've seen one of the modules having to be replaced because of a small amount of water ingress in an E61.

Would a plastic bag cause any problems with ventilation?

considering with the polystrene coating both sides of the electronics id only imagine that ventilation and heat dicipation is not a real issue , if you felt it was an issue running a bit of garden hose along the wiring loom through the binbag should solve the issue
