Well, there isn't a "beginners version" per say. Photoshop Elements is a cut down version with less capabilities but easier tools - think of Elements as a photo editor and Photoshop as a design/retouch tool. Generally I'd go for the full package, but thats just me - I like to learn as much as I can in one go.

If your needs are simple photo editing, then Elements will serve just fine. There should be a 30 day trial on the Adobe website.
