Salt Inhalation Therapy

As there are a few threads here periodically about asthma, blocked sinuses and similar breathing issues, people might be interested in Salt Inhalation Therapy. Firstly I don’t see this as medical advice as it is a non-medical treatment & these establishments don’t advise you one way or another to cease / decrease your normal medication. Secondly, I have no affiliation to anyone who offers this service.

I have really suffered over the last few years with shortness of breath / asthma attacks whilst running. In 3 years I didn't run a race where I didn't stop to walk due to lack of breath. I said I'd try this as I was having no luck with my asthma medication. I can’t praise it enough. I did 12 sessions (usually one or two hour sessions) but noticed immediate improvements. After 3 sessions I ran the Streets of Galway, I ran the full race with no need to stop and felt I could keep going another 8k (took 3min of my PB). At the start of October (about 10 sessions in) I ran the Galway Bay Half Marathon, again I ran the full distance & never felt at any stage that I was short of breath. I finished in 1.59 taking 27mins of my PB (albeit on a flatter course) but I can honestly say that this wouldn’t have been possible were it not for the Salt Clinic.

In the space of a few weeks running has suddenly become easy for me. Now when I’m running I automatically slip into a natural breathing rhythm & can concentrate on other things such running form / footfall etc – this would have been impossible before as I always felt short of breath and it was hard to take my mind off it whilst running.

It has not only improved my running but my general wellbeing also. For years I have had trouble sleeping & could only sleep at night with the Breathe East nose strips (I also need them for exercise) but now I can sleep without them and I can honestly breathe freer now than I can ever remember.

When I was in the first couple of sessions I could actually feel the salt working its way through my sinuses & breaking down any mucus / phlegm build up. For the next couple of days I was coughing a spitting up phlegmy discharge (sorry for being so gross) but it really cleared me out and made an instant difference. I haven’t been in a month and can still run freely with no breathing problems & I have stopped taking all my medication too. I to do a 2 hour session every couple of months just to top it up & anytime I have a big race coming up I’ll do an hour the day before hand. I’d recommend it to anyone.
