Irish Rail - Clondalkin-Galway

So, I'll be moving to Clondalkin next week for a course. I'd rather take a train than a bus as I like to avoid buses at all costs. Judging by the horrible Irish Rail website, there is a train that goes from Clondalkin - Galway. I couldn't figure it out very well though and I couldn't get the prices up.

If anyone could let me know that there is a train that goes from around that area, where it is and how much a return is, that would be great.

    Thank you!

Clondalkin is not on Irish Rail network, but you can get a Luas (trams with lots of seats) right into Heuston Station, takes about 20 to 30 minutes, and then get the train to Galway from there. They are very regular all day and have clocks that show when the next one is due.

Might be a bit of a walk from Clondalkin to the Luas stop if you have any problems getting around on foot.

Yes it is, there is a station on Fonthill Road. However, depending on where in Clondalkin, using a different station may be more useful, i.e. Heuston or Park West and Cherry Orchard.

You will have to change trains at some point, whether by going to Heuston or Newbridge/Kildare/Portarlington. Any connection via Limerick, while it gets you to Galway at an earlier time, means a longer journey with more changes. As many of the trips mean going to Heuston and doubling back, the on-line booking system has problems calculating a fare. You can however (a) buy a Heuston-Galway ticket and a separate Clondalkin-Heuston ticket (b) buy at the ticket office. I'm not sure if you can travel Clondalkin-Galway with a Heuston-Galway ticket - the rules seem to prohibit it.

Single webfares from Heuston to Galway vary between €10 and €26 (double that for return) + booking fee.

Single is €34.50 flat in the booking office. Return is €34.50 or €48.00. The lower fare is applicable Monday to Thursday & Saturday and the higher fare represents fares on Fridays & Sundays at booking offices and telesales only.

Good look trying to get to Galway by train. You just invented a new Rail Network.

What area exactly in Clondalkin would you be going to. I'd say your best bet is a train to heuston and the next train to clondalkin (fonthill) There is also the 151 bus which stops right outside heuston for closer access to the village.. Really depends where in Clondalkin you're going though...

No, same network that has been there for 150 years.
There is also the 151 bus which stops right outside heuston for closer access to the village.
The 151 goes via Cork Street, not very useful for Heuston.

13 From Harristown Towards Grange Castle - via Thomas Street
51 City Centre to Clondalkin (Neilstown)
51d Hawkins St./Waterloo Rd. Towards Clondalkin
    51x Dunawley to UCD Belfield
69 From Hawkins St. Towards Rathcoole
    69x Hawkins Street Towards Rathcoole
79/a Aston Quay to Spiddal Park / Park West (79a)

For Neilstown, the buses on the N4 corridor would be better.

    ? what are on about?

    OP

You have the option of a train into Hueston and then get a galway train

or get a train going to Kildare or Portlaoise and catch the Galway train there

To be fair to the OP while train options do appear for Clondalkin to Galway and v.v., prices do not, so it is impossible to buy online.

Well then, it appears getting a Go Bus in the City is a much cheaper, quicker and viable option no matter how much I hate buses.

Well I dunno exactly where my accommodation is until I move in on Monday, as bizarre as that sounds. It isn't too far away from the Health and Leisure centre though, I know that much. So a bus from Clondalkin to the City Centre and then the Go Bus would be best.

Thank you all for your replies! :)

    Why?

Comfort? Trains are just as bad assuming you can even get a seat
Value for money? Nope, this thread shows that cant be the problem
Toilet facilities? Can you really not hold it for 2 hours or go at either station?

This "Train is better" thing is such crap. Public transport is useless regardless of method. You should just say you hate public transport.

Get the train to Hueston Station, then you can get the 69 Dublin Bus from Parkgate Street just over the Luas bridge from Hueston Station.

The 69 will leave you outside Tesco in the middle of Clondalkin Village, only a 5 minute or so away from Clondalkin Sport and Leisure Centre on the Old Nangor Road.

Not better, but it is nicer. And in other countries it rocks. Not here tho, and it sinks so much taxpayers' money. And taxpayers that don't even use it.

Unfortunately the station in Clondalkin was "moved" a couple of years ago, and it's not really in Clondalkin any more.

Not for any of those reasons. I was on a student bus that crashed a year ago and killed our driver. I never feel comfortable on them.

    That's a shame. :(

The Fonthill station is Clondalkin

Clondalkin is a very big area OP, I'd definitely second getting the train to/from Hueston + 69 bus option. When you get to Hueston there's several options that'll get you to Clondalkin quickly, but it'll be easier to figure out which works best for you when you know where exactly you're staying.
