Planning a Coolant Change

I'm doing a coolant change in a Mk1 Yaris over the coming days and will be picking up some genuine stuff at the main dealer maybe tomorrow.

I checked the handbook and it said the car took in and around 4.5 to 4.7 litres. Would I just buy two one litre bottles in this situation and mix them together with water?

Depends on the mix recommended, some stuff may require a 1 in 2 mix, others a 1 in 3 others a 1 in 1. Roughly though 2l of coolant (which no doubt contains antifreeze) to 2.5l water would be hunky dorey. Use water out of the tumble dryer if it's handy, doesn't really matter as there'll be corrosion inhibitors in the coolant anyway.

I had a look through the manual today and it is not very clear cut. I'm just going to go with half and half and hope for the best.

I did notice when I was in Halfords the other day that they have stuff which is described as 'pre-mixed'. I generally try to avoid them for stuff that isn't oil these days though (they are selling Castrol Magnatec 5L for 20 quid at the moment!)

Is the genuine gear not already mixed?

No need to be guessing, have a read off the label and see what the mix is :) Ask the lad behind the counter for a looksee at the bottle before you buy it.

I think this is the stuff I'm after: http://www.ebay.ie/itm/GENUINE-TOYOTA-RED-COOLANT-ANTIFREEZE-1-L-PRE-MIXED-/360400249822?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item53e98763de

If it's premixed you'll need 5l of it, Bryaner was spot on.

Is there anything specific about Toyota stuff that makes it different to any other OAT coolant? If not 2l of OAT and the rest water would do fine I would think.

Yes any I have purchased from the Toyota main dealer has always been pre-mixed, worked out around €6 or €7 a litre.

    So thirty quid around?

    Not bad I suppose.

    Hey VM, be careful.

I know that Toyota use stuff in some of their motors that cannot be mixed with water. It's red.

I've come across it more than once. In my current Esty for example. Apparently you can cause all manner of problems if you add water.

(edit: if you completely flush it out though as you are planning then you can replace with standard)

Picked up three litres for 18 quid at the Toyota dealer. Quite reasonable I think.

They told me my car didn't take five and that three should do just fine.

you gonna measure what you take out- 3 litres is a lot different than 4 if you haven't got enough!
If it measure more than 3 litres, pour it back in and get more - don't muck about putting a little of the old stuff in on new stuff.
Hopefully the guys know what they are talking about and this is just anal what-if scenario.

Looking on Castrol.co.uk it gives the coolant amount for the Yaris as being between 4.3 and 4.7 litres. Quick Google of it is saying 4.7 but this seems to be for the US model.
