Battery problem, confusing!

I'm having a weird problem with my 3GS lately. Up until last week the battery life in it was grand, I only needed to charge it every two or three days.

The other night I went to bed, battery was at 70% or so, and in the morning the phone was dead. I didn't change any settings or anything.

I checked the usage screen and the usage time is now always the exact same as the standby time. So I assumed that there's some program eating up the battery in the background.

So the battery is draining really fast throughout the day, even just in standby mode. I did a test the other night, charged the phone, put it into aeroplane mode and went to sleep. The battery was still at 100% the next morning like it always would have been. So at least i know there's nothing wrong with the battery itself.

So anyway, the phone is still draining the battery way too fast when I have everything turned off. Bluetooth, data, 3g, location services, wi-fi and push notifications are all off, and all background apps closed.

Anybody have any ideas? The only difference between my settings and aeroplane mode is the actual phone (I think), could that be constantly draining it? I can't see what else it could be.

yeah, i had that problem when i first got my 3gs. you either have to power cycle the phone or do a soft reset. that should cure it.

as above I'd try a soft reset(hold in Lock and Home for 30seconds).
If that doesn't work I'd try a restore in itunes, what firmware are you on out of interest?

I've tried a few soft resets and hard resets, no joy.

I'm on 4.2.1, jailbroken if that matters!

are you on the iPad Baseband 06.15.00?
If so it could be an activation issue which I've seen happen a few times and the only way to fix was to undo the jailbreak and activate then re-jailbreak.

maybe this link might help you

Yeah I'm using the ipad baseband.

I'm not sure if I can undo the jailbreak or not. You see I got the phone off my brother who lives in the UK, and he jailbroke/unlocked the phone for me, and if I un-jailbreak it or restore the phone I won't be able to activate the phone again because I don't have a UK simcard (Orange I think the phone was originally). I think that that's the case anyway, maybe I'm wrong.

Thanks for the link, I'll give those ideas a go and see what happens.

the ipad baseband wont restore in iTunes with an official firmware so that's out of the question.
I've seen this happening a few times before and this is how I fixed it

Try this at your own risk of course
    Download the 3gs 4.2.1 firmware from http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/
    Download Redsnow 0.9.6rc16 or above
Choose your original firmware downloaded above, click next, select deactivate only and click next.
When that's done do the same again but choose install cydia(which should re-activate)

Cheers, I might give that a go later and see if it helps.

I just got around to doing this yesterday evening, removing the jailbreak and then jailbreaking again. So far it seems to have done the trick, it's the first time in ages that there's even a difference between usage time and standby time.

    Thanks a mil Cathal! :)
