PC World and Currys have the samsung 1 TB spinpoint f3 class hd103sj on clearance. (product code 0471416)
Doing a build on a new pc and was shocked at the price increase on internal hard disks in the last couple of weeks.
Happened to visit PC World in Navan and bought the last 1 TB Samsung disk. They also had 500 G/b F3 at the same price.
I understand this clearance offer is also at other PC World and Currys not sure about Dixons or how long this offer is for.
Currently Komplett is charging €119.95 and Dabs €126.69.

Cheers, OP, I need a couple of 1TB internal HDDs.

Do people reckon there's anything to choose between this and the WD one mentioned in this thread? (other than having to remove the case, of course...)

Yeah, apologies for BA digression but what's the story on the mad price increases recently, was going to get some 2TB drives but the pricing has gone from mid £50 to over a £ton on a good few of the usual websites.....

The price increase is because of the floods in Thailand I believe

Jeez, it really must be a small world after all

As far as I know many of the big hard drive producers like western digital have had to shut down factories over there

hard drive prices have recently gone through the roof for some reason.

i bought a bunch of 2tb desktop drives a couple of months ago for £50 a pop from overclockers in the UK, but the same disks are now £127.99.

glad i got in when i did i guess.

i imagine pc world just don't know that drive prices are rising dramatically at the moment.

Yep, most places have put their prices up because they are aware of impending shortages. Even though prices have been going up since around the 20th, actual shortages are really only just kicking in now and over the coming weeks as supply chain stock runs out.

Clearly whoever is on the floor at PCW isn't aware of the situation, i'd snap up those drives asap because prices are going to continue to rise for the rest of the year.

    Article
Flooding in Thailand will cause an estimated 28% drop in the supply of hard drives, leading to a 50m unit shortfall, analysts predict.

The flooding, which has killed 350 people since July, has hit manufacturing facilities of drive manufacturers Western Digital and Toshiba, along with drive component manufacturers.

Analysts believe supplies of hard drives are likely to be affected well into March next year, resulting in production of only 105-115m units to end of December, falling short of demand of 170-180m units.

Company ArticlesMEA PC market shows healthy growth in Q3Technology companies top Forbes Innovation listSeagate announces GoFlex Satellite Wireless HDDThailand accounts for some 40% of global hard drive production, and floods in low lying areas have hit several facilities. Western Digital and Toshiba plants in Navanakorn Industrial Estate Zone have been flooded, and Western Digital has also closed its Bang Pa-in Industrial facility.

Seagate, which also has production facilities in the country, has escaped any damage to its plants, but may struggle with component supplies. Nidec, which accounts for 70-80% of hard drive motors has been affected, and is trying to shift production from Thailand to China and the Philippines.

Analysts predict that the shortfall in demand will push up prices of drives, with a knock-on effect for PC manufacturers such as Dell and HP. The flooding may result in some uptick of solid state drive sales, although these would not replace demand for larger capacity drives.

Yeah glad I got a few a month or so ago around similar pircing from Scan (don't forget the VAT vibe666), I'm ever thirsty on storage, 19TB HTPC at present and my rips keep growing and growing, however at that price I'm just going to have to go without back-up and chance it

Are you asking which is faster? The F3. The Western Digital drive is a low power drive and is slower (hence "green" name).

I noticed that myself when I tried to buy a 2TB Western Digital elements over the weekend, it had more than doubled in price.

Cheers Monotype. It'll mostly be for backup/archiving so the speed isn't crucial.

I guess it'll come down to what I can find (if anything) on the shelves!

anybody know where to get 3 external 3.5" 1tb drives for the cheapest money?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,264 ✭✭✭witnessmenow

I checked PCW Galway yesterday, didnt see any.

They had about 8 HDDs in PC World in Jervis St. SC but none were Samsung. The only one that had a price was a 500gb Hitachi and that was €64.99.

For anyone interested, Argos have a couple of 2TB drives going for around €99

    yes, last week. :D

you'd be as well just buying 2.5" USB disks at the moment, with the prices of 3.5" disks as high as they are.

    cheapest 1tb 2.5" USB drive on overclockers is £94.99 - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-012-OK&groupid=1657&catid=1659&subcat=1902

    cheapest internal 1tb 3.5" drive on overclockers is £92.99 - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-250-SE&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=1279

although the 'value' ocuk 3.5" USB drive is only £79.99 - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-020-OK&groupid=1657&catid=1659&subcat=941

personally, i'l be sticking with 2.5" drives for anything that needs to be moved around that won't fit on a flash drive, doesn't seem to make much sense to have to lug around something that much bigger with a psu in tow as well.

EDIT: looks like here might be your best bet. :)http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056437238

The F3 vibrates a lot, I've got four of them in my case and the vibrations/hum off them is fairly loud. Still a bargain at €50 though

FYI there are only two of these left; one in Liffey Valley PCWorld and one in Currys in the Jervis Centre.

I got the last one in Carrickmines. ;)

    Thanks!

I'll need the 3.5" though as it must be powered externally. I'll try HMV but I think they'll be hard got now!

Not really a bargain if speed/need is not essential, prices are way over inflated. Bought a 2tb f4 in June for €58, the markets will correct itself if everyone stops going on a mad rush before prices increase further. 5c per GB is reasonable, anything else is overpriced. Have two f3's also, fast but they vibrate a lot and make the case hum a little.

It's a PC World in Jervis isn't it? Unless there's a Currys as well.

I was there Tues and didn't see it after being told all their internal HDDs were on the shelf.

Sorry, got it wrong way round - Currys in Liffey Valley and PCWorld in the Jervis Centre. Their product code is 471416, if that helps?

There were definitely no Samsung-branded drives on the shelf. Might check again this eve. Thanks.

Gave Jervis a call there, says they're showing as having 1 in stock and that when something has a quantity of one in their system then chances are it's a faulty return, likely in a box 'upstairs' and about to be written off. I pushed him, asked if I could have a look at it if I dropped in, and he said they just wouldn't be able to get to it.

Bit strange. Seems to me a model of disk they're selling off might just have a stock level of 1, but he wasn't budging.

Edit: Called Liffey Valley and got the last one. Thanks peckerhead ;)
