i have an 03 honda 450 4x4 quad. started losing power once it would get warmed up about 1 year ago. took it to a mechanic and got the engine rebuilt. was going good for about 2 months. didnt get any abuse as we were trying to run it in gently then it started losing power again. but more random this time. anybody any ideas as to what could be the problem? bled the petrol to get any dirt out and checked the oil level and spark plug. all looks to be in good condition.

How long since the valves have been adjusted?
It should be done on an annual basis.

Could be a lot of things, they need the same attention as a car/jeep.

Maybe the fuel filter or air filter ?
If you need a quad mechanic send me a message, I know two lads in Kinnegad and Trim that are cheap.

The engine was rebuilt in may and it was running fine untill last month. took it back to the mechanic to get the oil changed and so he could check it over. He usually works with motorbikes so is not that familiar with quads or their problems. It never seems to lose power when we take it to him so he can see whats happening. He said he can take it apart again and double check everything but we cant really do without the quad for 2 months. Was hoping someone would have a possible solution for me to save time trying one thing and then another untill the problem is fixed. Based in donegal so trim is a little far for me!

Turns out it was just dirt in the petrol. Was clogging up the carbuerettor. Just need to get the tank cleaned out and i'm sorted again!

    Cool. Back in action.

Had the same problem with a motorbike.
You might have to drain the carbs if you still have any problems, they have these small drain-screws that lets the old petrol flow out of the carbuerettor.
Takes about 1 minute to do, but you might need a Hayne's Manual to find the screws on the carbuerettor.

Yeah doing that on a temporary basis untill i get the time to clean out the tank.

I would advise you to buy an inline filter with a pleated paper element.
These catch all the crap before it gets to your tank.
Most of them are clear so you can see if it is getting clogged, to be honest it takes an awful lot to block one.
They are cheap, less than 5 from a lawnmower or motorcycle shop.
