GOALS! GOALS! GOALS!

In the last 4 years (for which I happen to have stats to hand) the English Premier League goals per game average has risen from 2.48 in 2009/10 to 2.97 so far this season, the current CL 4 have scored 29 goals against one another. 3-1 is the most common scoreline this season. 0-0 was 12% of scores in 2008/09, its 8% so far this.

    Over 1.5 goals 81.6%
    Over 2.5 goals 57.1%
    Over 3.5 goals 37.8%

Clearly over the season things may well settle down somewhat as winter grips and the teams in the lower half of the table decide defending rather than attacking might yield more points, but the overall trend does look like being maintained.

Lee Dixon writing in the Guardian reckons the art of defending is being lost due mainly to the fact its now hard to tackle without risking a yellow card so defending players give the attackers an extra yard of space. It seems to me what this really means is that old fashioned agricultural late tacklers are in trouble but those who know how to time a challenge earlier in the attack and have good feet will still be effective (Carra v Agger if you will).

Personally I think it's nothing more than there being much better attacking players from top to bottom in the league...

Seems to me that players will drop like they've been hit with buckshot at the touch of contact and thats at local level, the art of defending is there, the art of diving and dropping under any contact has just surpassed it

And, as Gary Neville will continue to point out, piss poor defending.
