    Hi

Does Siri require an Internet connection to work properly? I can understand that it might need it for things like searches and booking cinema tickets and the like. But does it need a connection to be able to set up calendar events, reminders, alarms and to send texts/make calls?

    Thanks.

Yep, just toggled airplane mode and Siri won't work with it on.

Thanks. That's good to know. A little disappointing, though. I was hoping it could do the basics without eating into a data allowance or relying on good coverage.

I suppose it's too early to tell what damage it can do to a data allowance, but has anyone any comments about it under performing if it drops out of wifi or 3G yet?

balls, bummer for people without data package or ones out of connection to access data

It needs a data connection to work as well as it does. The old voice control was rubbish because it tried to figure out what you were saying locally, on the phone, whereas with Siri it does the voice recognition on apples servers, meaning it can understand a lot more, and understand it well. This means that multiple phrases can be used, such as how's the weather, what's The weather like, will it rain, will it snow, do I need a coat, etc...

Yeah it's a bit of a bummer if you don't have a decent connection or no data plan, but in that case you couldn't check anything online based anyway. Or if your trying to do something like set an alarm or a reminder, you can still do it the old fashioned manual way. Trust me though, if siri didn't require a net connection it would be rubbish.

Correct, I don't have Siri. Yet. Debating whether to switch to one of the VF plans and upgrade. CW have offered a €250 trade in for my 4, and the upgrade costs €129. Unfortunately the balance of €121 can only be spent in CW. would be nice to put it towards the monthly bills.

Anyway my query was just about the usability of Siri, as that's the only real difference that I would see after the upgrade. I know the photos and chip are better, but for what I do on my phone I doubt I'd see improvements in those areas.

You can stay on your current plan and still upgrade, 18 mth PCA300 is 129 I believe, you'll lose data roaming if you had it.

Id request the unlock for the 4, sell it for more than the 250 trade in offer, buy the 4s and have cash in pocket.... IF I wanted to stay with vodafone.

I read it, but I was curious as to what would Siri say on the subject.

I found this article, which kinda answers my data usage question:

"Our advice: Siri’s monthly data usage is so minimal, it probably isn’t something you have to worry about, no matter your data plan."

    ....unless you're on O2 :pac:
