    Hi there,
Im a third year engineering student and we are currently doing a module in designing a product. We have come up with a product and I was just wondering would people be interested in buying it. I have to do this sort of survey as it falls under the business section of the module. The product is as follows... it involves placing a catalytic converter in the chimney of households so that any fumes from household fires go through the converter and converts any harmful into harmless gases which are then released to the atmosphere. A fan would be placed above the catalytic converter so it would suck the fumes up through the converter.
The price for this product would be roughly €350.
Would people be interested in buying this?
Would they be interested in buying if it was a at a lower price?
Help would be greatly appreciated thanks.:)

Just some questions for your design group:

why would Joe soap who is already under pressure cash wise buy something that yields no discernible benefit to him: okay it might save planet for the 8 billionth person?

whats the expected life and replacement cost of the product: fan and converter?

    what is install cost?

    what is the running cost?

Does the 350 include cabling and switch gear to required standard?

Ho will u know if its not working?

ps my answer is no I wouldnt:)

Can you overcome the sooting up for the cat? Surely this would prevent it's use
What about the restriction it will place in the flue, could this result in spillage into the room!
I think there may possibly some issue with this idea, be careful

This is a very strange concept:
.... a catalytic converter in the chimney of households so that any fumes from household fires ....

A catalytic converter for €350.- for a multi fuel device - was there an engineer involved, a physican, a plumber or heating engineer?

Catalytic converters for home heating devices are available since decades but cost several times that money. And are controlled by lambda probes ( for several times that money) which are fuel/temperature dependant.

They also need regular control and replacement.

What proto type had been researched, under what conditions?

Flues can be used for these types of converters - but chimneys ?

    Contact a heating engineer.

Or better: deliver a cheap and reliable lambda probe or similar sensor.

How effective is your product? Has it been tried and tested?
I find this idea interesting as we suffer from clouds of smoke coming down into our living area.
I would be concerned about the price though, i wouldnt buy it for that price.
Certainly though if it was lower.
