Without going into discussion on the operational status of the new TETRA system, which is a completely different topic, I've always been curious as to what is happening with the old VHF and UHF kit that was in use across the country prior to the change over.

I heard someone mention before that it was to be forwarded to voluntary organisations like the Red Cross and Civil Defence but I'd imagine there must be thousands of euro worth of equipment which would still be left to sell on.

Does anyone know if there is any official decision as to what's happening with the old kit? I know in the UK they've been shifting the likes of HT600s, MTS2000s/HT6000es regularly to the usual stock clearing companies.

I know of at least one Mountain Rescue unit that got a load of them ,so many i think they have around 3 per person! so on that basic im sure all the kit just went to the groups like this

Some were given to mountain rescue and CRBI units around the country. Special olympics and a few other community organisations also got some.

The rest had to be destroyed as part of the TETRA contract with Motorola.

Most if not all stock is now gone.

Fair enough. How the hell did they get that term into the contract? Obviously the UK contract for Airwave mustn't have had that condition in it. A huge waste of potential revenue in my opinion.

Ireland's a tiny market, obviously Motorola don't want that market being flooded with cheap secondhand units taking away from new sales

so obviously selling them to potential customers would be a problem
but giving them to MR/charitable organisations would couldn't probably afford new ones in any great quantity anyway wouldn't be seen as a problem

True, I hadn't really considered that. It just seems a bit of a sneaky way of keeping the price of handhelds artificially high while there would have been a available pool.

I'd also imagine that the radios could have been sold in bulk to another country, say in the developing world, which might require such a system for its services.
