Apple TV as Home Media Player

    Hi all.
I'm looking into buying an apple tv but I'm aware that it needs iTunes running on a laptop to do any kind of streaming over my network.

What I really want to do is use it to stream directly from my Iomega home network drive without the need for the pc on.I know I could get a dedicated media player for this but I want to use mirroring with my iPad too.

From doing some research I've found this software called aTV Flash(black) . Apparently this will do what i want and add lots more to the apple tv. Looks great, but I'd love hear if anybody here has this setup or if there's another option that would give me what I need.

    Thanks in advance.

You could also jailbreak it, install XBMC and stream any file type from your nas drive. That's what I do.

Don't think you can jailbreak iOS 4.4 for apple tv yet though.

I've found XBMC and jail breaking the AppleTV very buggy and a pain to setup.

After playing around with Jailbreaking, I eventually stopped doing it and bought a 2TB drive for an old computer which i use to store my media. This is streamed to my AppleTV via iTunes but for video formats not supported such as AVI, MKV etc I use AirVideo Server app which converts and streams on the fly without having to wait.
