Sponsorship for Marino Club, not sure if the club exists?

    Hi,

Over the last couple of weeks I've had two teenaged lads knock at the door (Dublin 13) looking for sponsorship for cycles from Dublin to Galway and just today for one from Dublin to Wexford.

Both times they were claiming affiliation with a club in Marino. I went online to see if I could find any information about the sponsored cycles and the first one was exactly like a sponsored cycle that took place in 2010. All the details were exactly the same except for the year and the charity. No mention of a club in Marino organising the charity.

I feel bad for being suspicious but something isn't right about their spiel. Usually there would be some information to be found online that would fit exactly with their sponsorship requests but I've found nothing.

Does anyone out there have any information that can prove me wrong? Or is this a couple of friends getting together and finding a way of scamming people and official charities out of money?

Quite possibly. Only give money to people / charities that you know.

See if you can get the offical name of the club and check with Cycling Ireland.

Thanks for that Victor, good idea, just sent a mail there. Hopefully this will turn up as being genuine but you never know.

I grew up in that part of the world and still spend a lot of time there - if there is a cycling club, it's brand new!!

Maybe it's the scouts or one of the schools - but I can't see them venturing to D13 to get sponsorship - D9 and D11 are close enough!

Not sure it it's related, but we had some fellas around our area (dublin 15) claiming the same, a neighbour had his trek hybrid lifted from the side entrance the same evening. Not sure if its connected, but going to carpenterstown from marino for sponsorship sounds a bit suspect

I had an email back from Heather at Cycling Ireland saying they have no such club in Marino and that the story sounds suspicious. With the second fella I asked him if he had any ID and he said no. Heather suggested same if they call to the door

"The next time they call around ask them if you can see their Cycling Ireland ID card, and you will find out pretty promptly if they are registered with us or not!".

What's the best way to let the local community know about such scams going around?

SWL he he thanks yeah! He would be good but I don't think it's a national scale alert just yet ;)

I suppose I'm just looking for Residents Associations on the Northside that could pass the message on to their districts?

If you get one calling again start talking about bikes to him, get a bit techinical about bikes and confuse the hell out of him and ask him does he remember stephen kelly winning the tour de france and if he says yes to that give him a slap in the head and send him on his way

Had some chungfella knocking on the door looking for money for the marathon, quizzed him about how the training was going - he hadn't a clue so I politely declined
