hows it going lads, the parents are looking at buying a new car and have asked for my advice, their budget is around 30k and their looking for a saloon or suv, they asked my opinion on the skoda yeti  but i know nothing about it, are they better off getting something second hand?

You're gonna have to give a bit more info/requirements OP.

Buying second hand has less depreciation than buying new, but be wary of imports from England as they can be clocked quite easily.

The Yeti was given rave reviews by Top Gear as well as many newspapers and posters on here. For the sake of practicality as I live on a steep hill , I would go with the Diesel 2liter with all wheel drive. Having said all that, more information about what they are looking for is really needed. 30k is a lot of money, whatever way you look at it. Some fantastic vehicles with low mileage can be purchased for a fraction of that price from dealerships which will include warranty for anything unfortunate.

It's early, but I hope that helps.
