Lasek Diary

Thought I'd put this out here in case it would be useful for anybody considering doing it (reading some of the posts on here was helpful when I was making my decision). Had Lasek done yesterday morning... actually had it done in Boston as I moved over a couple of years back so the details of the clinic itself probably won't be of much use to folks back home, but if anyone has any questions about the procedure/recovery etc let me know. I'll try and update this over the next few days.

    Day 0

Started early around 7.45am. Checked in, sat waiting for a few minutes and was called into a room. Went over consent forms again, was given some eye drops and took some valium. Told I was next in line then, and brought to bench outside laser surgery room. Valium kicked in pretty lively and was perfectly calm by the time I was called in. I had checked on the form not to be told what was happening during the surgery, but since I'd read up on it I knew what was happening at each stage anyway. Found it fascinating! Not in any way sore or uncomfortable... there were some drops that were cold as hell but that was about it. Was over and done with by 9am, walked out into the waiting room and was able to read the name on the back of the framed NFL jersey on the opposite wall! Texted my mum then (vision was blurry, but was able to read texts) and called my friend who picked me up around 9.20. By the time people started texting me back, was no longer able to read my phone. Went home, had some breakfast and it was about 11:15 by the time I got to bed. Popped one of the painkiller tablets first just in case. Slept a bit, but mostly just rested my eyes for the 4 hours. Got up, and started putting in the various eye drops. Sight was a little clearer than before I had slept. Took it easy the rest of the day, went to bed around 10. No pain or discomfort in either eye, kept taking tablet every 6 hours just in case.

    Day 1

Woke up a couple of times during the night, with a sensation similar to how it used to feel when I used to wear the hard contacts and something would get in my eye... though this passed more quickly. Blasted my eye with artificial tears the first time, didn't bother either of the subsequent times as my eyes were already streaming. No pain or discomfort apart from that, and my eyes haven't felt dry either. Vision noticeably better this morning. Had my 1 day checkup about 8am, was told I had very good vision for being 1 day post op but that I shouldn't be surprised if it got blurrier and more uncomfortable before it got better. Was amazing on the bus back to Harvard being able to read the shop signs, street signs etc! So far no more discomfort, and I haven't taken any painkillers today (it's 8.30pm now). Vision is a little blurrier than earlier... but obviously not so bad I can't see the screen!
