Dropped my external hd

    It won't start up properly, just clicks.....it's a LaCie with a samsung HD501LJ hdd, it the data be recovered? If so would it be expensive? thanks.

    Remove the hard drive from the Lacie enclosure and try using it in another machine, you may be able to copy the files off it that way. And yes if the drive is truelly f*cked you can expect to pay a fair bit to get it professionally looked at :(

    there are a couple of tricks you can try but only as a last resort and if you are ok with it being completely fecked
    the first is the freezer trick which is where you put the drive into a sealed plastic bag and put into the fridge overnight
    then you quickly put it into the pc and try and back up as much info as you can before the heads return to normal and start hitting the platters inside
    another is the 1 inch trick where you drop the drive from 1 inch to dislodge the head from the platter
    again as i said last resort only stuff

    If the data is really valuable its prob best OP gets it to a data recovery specialist as doing thse "tricks" may cause further damage, unless the data is replaceable I wouldn't try the freezer tricxk, it may work or screw the drive up more
