Strong varnish for over spraypaint?

    Hiya,

    I have been spraypainting picture frames a variety of different colours using Montana spraypaints. Some of the frames I use are second hand, others are from Ikea.

    The spray takes better to some frames than others, and it has a tendency to chip off if manhandled somewhat (I've been selling the frames with pictures in them at markets).

    I need to make the paint more robust, is there super strong varnish I could use that would toughen up the paint and make it more chip resistant?

    The problem is probably more to do with preparation than paint. If the frames were already finished in a production system they were not designed to be painted over.The type of finish used could effect the paint you apply.Different paints do not always take over others.How well did you clean down the surface before painting? Colour chipping is usually due to lack of bond between coats.

    Yeah, I didn't do anything with the frames beforehand, and some of them are fairly shiny. The whole reason me spraypainting is to make it a speedy process, so what would you recommend for me to do that won't take much extra time?

    Is using a strong varnish any use if the bond between the surface and paint not so good?

    Part of the problem is if you are varnishing over a previously lacquered surface, the varnish will not "take" to the lacquer.

    You could give them a very light sand to take the gloss off them, then rub them down with ESP. The esp will have dried within a half an hour and should give you the "key" you need between coats.

    Can i ask how you are spraying them EG. are you using an aerosol can or conventional spray gun or pot?
