    Hi,
I have a Maxtor 640GB Ext HD. It is a few years old but I always thought it was ok cause I have it stored safely. It has photos, music, movies on it. I plugged it in tonight to my lap top and found that my lap top does'nt register that it's there. I also have no power light on the Ext HD. I'm thinking maybe the power is gone on the HD. Easy solution buy a new one on ebay. But the Maxtor's have had a bad name for these products failing in the past. Has anybody else experienced this and what was the problem / result.

    Thanks in advance.

You could take the HD out of it, mount it in a computer (probably be SATA) and get the data back that way! If the power board inside the drive is f*cked I wouldnt bother fixing it and just buy a new external, Maxtor are quite a unrelyable brand btw!
