Tyres for Volvo S40

So this isn't another thread about winter tyres.

My Dad drives a 2007 Volvo S40. He's currently got 4 different tyres. One has a flat spot and the thread depth is a bit low on two others. Taking all of that into consideration, he's going to change all four.

The thing is he's having a bit of trouble finding suitable tyres. He needs 205/55/17s. He's not looking to get a set of winters and a set of summers because of the hassle of changing them etc so is it all seasons he's looking for? Does anyone have any recommendations of tyres in this size? I've looked on camskill and eiretyres but I don't know much about tyres to be honest. He doesn't mind spending a bit of money but was quoted 200 a corner for some bridgestones which is a little bit excessive.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Nkay.

Are you sure they are 205/55/R17? I had a S40 and I'm nearly certain the size on them was 205/50/R17 to my memory.

I had these on mine and found them pretty good:

These are pretty good too if he is not limited by price:

Yeah I've had a PM saying that he's got the size wrong too. You had the Continentals is it and the Vredstein are a cheaper option is it? Are they essentially tyres for all year round yeah?

And with Camskill do you have to get them delivered to a tyre fitters or to your home?

I've found independant tyre fitters to be the same price, if not cheaper, as ordering them online

Volvo just launched winter campaign last week and are offering wheel & tyre assembly that include winter tyres... May be worth contacting your local Volvo dealer ! They are a very competitive price considering you get alloy wheel & tyre...May not suit you but worth a call.

The correct size is 205/50/17 ..

We have a C30 so basically the same car.

I replaced the original Pirellis with Conti SportContacts as linked above. A full set of 17s should be about 500 euro fitted I reckon, I found a fair variation in prices so ring around.

I contacted my local volvo dealer recently - was quoted the guts of €1600 for an S40 wheel and tyre package .
.....I am new to volvos...but do ye really consider that competitive?

The dealer also stated that they're currently unable to get 205/50/17 winter/all season tyres, hence the packaged price. Find it hard to believe they can't source the tyres only - when I can hit the internet and get literally lost in offers.

As far as I am aware the package includes alloy wheels ...I am not saying that you need the alloy wheels but as far as I am aware most of the winter wheel/tyre assemblies offered are on steel wheels. I think BMW are around 1100 ? ...€1600 is a lot of money to invest but I got quoted nearer € 1300 ....

Most dealers will just try and source tyres through their local/usual tyre suppliers rather than the internet so no surprise there as the demand for winter/all season tyres is a reasonable new trend to Ireland and most tyre suplliers will not stock them or just order to demand as they do not want to be left with unsold stock.

Try somewhere like eiretyres for winters with steelies, also drop down to 16" wheels.

Bridgestone Blizzaks are €185 a corner on a steel wheel delivered, pre-balanced etc.

Winter tyres in anything larger than 16" are expensive to buy so demand is not there for them at least in this country. Also the bigger and wider you go with tyres the less effective they are for grip on snow and ice which kind of defeats the purpose of winter tyres. Add to that standard main dealer pricing and you come to those prices.

Stick to 16" rims and just get a bigger profile winter tyre on them.
