facebook chat online while (offline)

Opened facebook. Letf it a couple of minutes. Two people had messaged me in that time in ways of saying hi as though I was on IM. My IM was set to not be available to chat though, and (offline) in the little client. Likewise it was set to offline on my (windows 7) phone. Anybody else experiencing this? It is irritating.
