The new lower drink drive limit for professional drivers is 20mg but this doesn't appear to apply to Gardaí, seeing at they may through the course of their work be required to drive their vehicles in challenging circumstances surely they should also be included in this lower level group?
The drink drive limit which has come down in line with Europe, will see the current limit drop from 80 milligrams (mg) to 50 milligrams (mg) for all drivers and from 80 milligrams (mg) to 20 milligrams (mg) for learner, newly qualified drivers (for a period of two years after passing the driving test) and professional drivers such as bus, goods vehicle and public service vehicle drivers (PSV).

The specified drivers include PSVs, learner permits, a person holding a full licence for less than two years and and catagory of licence from B upwards (including a trailer)

The 20mg is for these specified drivers......there is no lower limit for a professional driver like a sales rep etc. Professional driver they are referring to is bus and lorry drivers that fall into the licence catagory of lower limIts

In regards the categories of licence if a Garda is driving a mini bus (D1 licence) then of course he or she is subject to the specified driver rule

We are still subject to the catagory of vehicle we drive in relation to the new Section 4 and 5 RTA 2010

It's strange that a taxi driver would be subject to the new limits where a Garda would not, I'd imagine driving a Garda car in pursuit or responding to an emergency would require more concentration and alertness than driving a taxi.

Don't they have any internal rules there at Garda that every officer on duty has to be sober anyway?

The Gardai are a law onto themselves. They do whatever they want because you know it's a hard job and yadda yadda.

A guard drink driving on duty deserves to be caught, and I'm sure 100% of Gardai would agree.
