Carnew Santa Dash 5k Dec 11th

The most eagerly anticipated road race of the year, The Carnew Santa Dash 5k, will be held on December 11th. Covering 5k (or 4.5 miles) on backroads of this South Wicklow hamlet, entry is €15, which includes a Santa costume.

Last years event was won in a staggering 32:19, by a cotton-wool bearded local man. Having since been mocked incessantly for his skeletal stature, rumours abound that he has been training hard all year in order to better fit the rotund Santa outfit. Can anyone wrest the trophy from his grasp? Will we see stirrings from retirement of hinterland athletes?? Shall the proximity of the Dying Cow pub entice ringers from afar??? All proceeds go to Carnew AFC and CONSOLE (Suicide Prevention Service) charity. Families and walkers welcome.

But isn't a 5k actually approximately 3.1 miles and not 4.5 miles? Or does this conversion have something to do with the proximity to the Dying Cow pub? ;)

I have no doubt that the Dying Cow has had a huge influence on the hinterland, no doubt this has crept into the local bureau for Weight႒ & Measure႒. Certainly the guy who measured the course last year shrugged his shoulders when I told him it was closer to 8k than the advertised 5, and said his car said 5 when he measured. Can't argue with the car :)

    Brilliant...

I had hoped to do this one as it's practically local, quite fancied the idea of running around dressed as Santa.. Alas, I can't make it this time but I'll have a go next year.

Surely if the same man wins it 2 years in a row that is worthy of a photo in the local newspaper, between the GAA notes and the farm machinery bargains? ;)

I can see DP posing now, in the santa outfit as he stretches seductively across a tractor.

I'm going to have nightmares tonight.

Oooooo.....hello Mr. December! I will need someone to send 12 copies of seductive Santa to the United States. There are no international rules prohibiting that, are there?

So the torch has been passed... congrats to Slogger Jogger who raced to victory in the second Carnew Santa Dash, (this year with extra cheek-painted rosyness). He cut a dash in his Santa suit, leading for much of the race, to take the gold and inaugural trophy. First lady home Lucy D ran a stormer, pacing the race as the 5k she thought it was, before digging deep on the final hill to chick her panting neighbour, to take the silver. Racoon Queen will have to use her imagination tonight, as there was no tractors willing to pose with a mere bronze for a reclining photo.

Good day out, and some of those Carnew kids have a lot of running talent. One kid in particular ran very well (in football boots), and there was talk after of setting up a local athletics club for kids. Very well organized, and hopefully a lot of money raised for Console charity.

Great event today. No numbers or chip timing. Everyone dressing head to toe in Santa suits. 7.2k for an advertised 5k race :) Very little flat on this course. You seem to be always going down or up. Junctions were sort of marked but I guessed right. This was a very Irish event. Expected to start at 2pm.. myself and dp standing at start line at 10 past 2 and no sign of anyone emerging from the pub / registration area :D. The training for next year's event will start at least the week before.
