i am trying to backup my iphone to my imac using itunes - i choose the backup option - not sure though if it backups my music and apps from phone -

also unclear on what the sync function actually does , does backup and restore from backup not work on there own -

It should automatically backup every time you sync. You probably won't need to restore your iphone too often. When I bought a new iphone I plugged it in and itunes asked if I wanted to restore from a previous backup. I clicked ok and it put my old contacts, bookmarks, calendars and stuff onto my new iphone. I suppose it's handy if you ever lose your phone. At least your contacts and stuff is backed up. Also when you update the software it backs up your phone, erases everything, installs the new software and then restores your old content.

thanks guys - i like most apple products , but i find itunes totally unuser freindly - the syncing process is very unclear - for instance you cant copy photos across from your phone using itunes - yet itunes is the default program for iphone ??
