On the new 4S the 3G button in network settings is missing, on my IP4 it was there and that was running ios5 also.

I dont want 3g to be always running, id rather have edge on and use 3g when i need it as it drains the battery and the signal quality is poorer.

    Any ideas?

Surprised no one else has commented on having this issue, according to apple forums and other websites, im not the only one to notice it missing, appears to be a 4s problem.

Its the carrier does it. It has been removed with 3 carrier files for quite a while.

The 4S globally on all carriers doesn't let you disable 3G. It only let's you turn data off but keeps the 3G radio on, unless you are in an area that doesn't have 3G.

Then it will drop down to Edge or GPRS.

What exactly is the point of not giving people the choice? Surely the carriers would be happy if you could turn off the 3G radio. Considering most people have a set amount of data to use in a month, if you've the radio off, you'll be using less and hence costing the carrier less money.. Can't understand this move..

I don't know, I don't think anyone knows why Apple did that.

a fix for the switching problem??

I suspect it may be for the same reason they dont allow facetime over a 3G connection, they don't wan't people to think its their Apple device 's fault if something is having trouble loading(It would be slow if limited to EDGE or GPRS connectivity). Assuming there are still people who dont know what 3G is..

May well be that in rreality, when this came up first on engadget, i remember they said with the Verizon CDMA iphone 4 in the states, it didn't have a 3G switch either.. Antennagate would have been fresh in the mid of apple engineers when designing the CDMA iphone 4

Don't think so. Up till now and still on the other iPhones you can toggle 3G on/off.

Actually its the opposite as you'd be hogging the 2G/EDGE cell instead of using a trickle of data on the 3G cell. ;)

Using 3g all the time also gives less signal.

Does anyone with a 4S have the toggle switch?

You have it the other way around. It's the 4S that doesn't have it, the 4 and 3GS does.

I heard someone had it on vodafone but after a re-boot it was gone.

But yeah, according to most google search's ive found its mostly a 4S problem.

I'm on vodafone. I never had the option to switch 3G off. My wife has a iPhone 4 and on vodafone, she has that option.

Hope they have an update to bring it back.

I think it has something to do with Siri. Turning the 3G off would almost make Siri useless because it would be too slow. That is something I read on an online article anyway.

A 3G option is more useful than Siri.
