Now that Michael Twee has become ninth president. I personally think the irish people have made a mistake. Aras an Uachtaran yet has again become a Retirement Home for a Geriactric politician. We will be the laughing stock of the world once again. Did any of the idiots who voted for Michael Twee ever consider what his Mental/Physical Health will be in 6 month/ a years time. He wouldnt be capable of carrying on the great work Mary McAleese did. What sort of Gob****es do we have voting in this country.

I gave him a vote and would humbly suggest that he would be more than capable of wiping the floor with you in a debate anytime over the next 7 years.

That's the question I would pose about those who gave Gallagher 1st preference. Thank God it wasn't that spoofer/chancer who got in.

sure age is just a number and he was the most qualified for the job

He's 70 ffs.. would people have the same concerns if 67 year old Norris won? The casual ageism shown by some is disgraceful.

I gave him my #2, and I'm more than happy and proud to see him as president. He's earned it. Now stop moping - whoever your favourite was has lost - So deal with it and get on with your life.

Laughing stock me hole. Do you honestly think anyone actually gives a shìt who our president is? Do you think people will even know? Off the top of your head, could you name the German president? Or Italy's, Austria's, Poland's etc? No one will think twice about who we have chosen to sit in a palace for seven years.

Dev was around the same age when he was president and it didn't hinder him.

Funny really......no-one has any control over their age, and yet it's held against them as if it were a choice like excusing murder or lying.

Give me age over the other two any day.

Btw, when you count us from next month, seven of the twenty republics in the EU will have presidents over 70, including two who have presidents over 80. Nothing at all to be laughing at clearly.

It is a sad sign of the rubbish options you had. David Norris who had an embarrassing campaign. An ex PIRA member, a woman who could only say constitution, Gay Mitchell who could not even make second place at least who is in a party which is the largest party in the Dail, Mary Davis is irrelevant and a guy off the Irish version of the Dragons den.

Apparently mis-spelling "Geriatric" twice in one post is an early symptom! ;)

Yeah, whatever. At least we get a vote for the head of our state. Michael D. Higgins is an honourable man, and world-wide respected politician. And he certainly doesn't try to steal funds set aside for poor families to try and heat his palace.

He retired nearly blind and extremely frail to a nursing home, it was harldy ideal.

It's his frailty, not his actual age, he already limps, you could see him visibly shaking on one of the debates. His mind might be sharp, but he looks at least 10 years older than he is

And you are entitled to it. I just know if I was going to vote, I would like better options than that.

He limps because of an injury he sustained a while back. A good friend of mine (28) limps due to a motorcycle accident 10 years ago. That's not a measure of frailty. Higgins has been zipping around the country for the last month like a man half his age.

Your problem with Michael D. seems to be based solely on his appearance. The reason he limps is because he broke his leg last year on a fact finding mission to South America last year with Trocaire. You admit that his mind is still sharp. Therefore, he is fully capable of carrying out the functions of the office.

    It's not the X-factor!

Thats funny given that most representatives in the north are either ex PIRA or ex UVF

Yes, we are entitled to it. That's the point. And you have the audacity to attack our pending president, when you don't even get to vote for your head of state.

What are your criticisms of Michael D. Higgins exactly? Give me 3.

Not true, but he does look frail. My bigger problem is I don't agree with his view on many things. He has the potential to go off on a big anti-American rant, and I couldn't believe he supports the shell to sea rabble of professional protesters (although he refused to confirm he still supports them, using the excuse that he'd be president and so inappropriate to give his views). On the subject of appearance, I do believe that Gallagher would be a better representative and give a better image on trade delegations and the like abroad, he has more of a presence about him.
You admit that his mind is still sharp. Therefore, he is fully capable of carrying out the functions of the office.

Yes assuming his body holds up, which I hope it does, I don't wish any ill health on him or anything like that, but he looked the most frail of all candidates.

Do the DUP have one ex UVF volunteer?

We do get to elect our politicians. And sure, our head of state does a magnificent job anyway.

Good luck to you, MDH. I gave you a no.2 after Norris, knowing damn well where it would wind up. Now for the next seven years

    • No self-composed bad poetry.
    • Hold back on the Irish (most of us can't understand you when you do).
    • And be nice to the Americans and the Israelis. (Odds are they're bigger than you).
    Other than that, congratulations.

He was the only good option though. Surely out of 7 candidates you would expect at least 4 good options but it was very limited. So limited that Sean Gallagher nearly won. If that last debate never happened, he probably would have won.
