I have about 300 quid to buy a camera and im looking for suggestions. just browsing a few online and dont really have a clue.

I need it to be able to take sport shots so it needs a good shutter speed (at least thats what i think its called). also it would be cool if i could get one that I could buy a better lense for later so if anyone knows a decent model then Id appreciate the help.

    Thanks

Well for €300 your best bet would be a second hand camera, something like a Canon 450. The shutter speeds in that price range wouldn't be much higher than 3FPS. A serious sports camera (like those that professional sports photographers use - think the Daily Mail shots etc) would be in the range of 10FPS but would set you back a few grand.

You could get a decent enough bridge camera (new) in that price range but you'd be sacrificing the ability to change lenses.

Personally I'd recommend you save up a bit more and get a new DSLR in the 500-600 price range. You'd get decent image quality and reasonable frames per second, and of course you could then add a fast zoom lens.

go forth to adverts.ie and see what you can find. Some great options like this for €300 or this for €200 plus find a lens < €100 or this for €280 or this one for €270 - Check the comments to see current status of each. You've lots of options - mostly 2nd hand will be well minded too. The confusing thing about it is what brand to go for. Now that makes a discussion. Personally, they are all well capable ;)

thanks for the suggestions so far. my main problem is that I need to buy a camera with a receipt so i can claim expenses for work so I dont think a second hand will do.

If you can stretch your budget another 70 quid, get yourself down to the Camera Centre on Liffey Street, just off Henry Street. I got myself a Fuji Finepix HS20. After reading through alot of reviews, it was consistantly in the top 5 bridge cameras to buy.

It has alot of automatic settings to help amateurs like myself with getting the right shots, including a sports setting. You also have a manual zoom function like a DSLR, with a range up to 720mm. Lovely little camera, quiet comfortable even in my big mits.

Ok... now you've gotten my attention !

I'm curious ... why do you need a receipt for work ? why do you need the camera to take sports shots ?

are work looking for you to photograph sports games because you have an interest in photography?

or are you looking at photographing sports games and trying to offset the costs of getting the gear by claiming it as a work expense ?

sports photography is not as easy as getting a camera with a fast shutter - you may need to learn about how to photograph various sports.

From your post it appears like you have limited knowledge of cameras or photography in general (no offence intended), you may need to learn a bit more about the relationships between ISO/ASA, Shutter speeds, Aperture, exposure compensation, DOF (Depth of Field) and loads of other photography terms. After you have learned and understood some of those terms you need to learn about positioning, lenses, etc.

Sports photography is about getting close to the action without being in the way of the action - for this reason long lenses are used...and these are not cheap, I've thrown a Canon 600mm on adverts with an asking price of €5K ish (they are €8-10K new), at the moment I'm considering throwing it up on Ebay and taking what I get because of the lack of offers.

if you are looking for someone to cover a sports game - there are plenty of good sports photographers on this forum who might be willing to do it (for a cheap enough price)
