If I buy a Return ticket from Heuston to Waterford - Outward Journey on Friday, Return on Sat

    Can I...

Travel from Heuston as far as Kilkenny
    Alight in Kilkenny
Continue the journey from Kilkenny to Waterford on a later train
Return from Waterford to Heuston the Next day...

    ..all on the one ticket?

Except as may be specified in the publications and notices of and applicable
to Iarnród Éireann, the holder of an return ticket may break his or her journey
at intermediate stations on any route for which the ticket is valid, provided the
journey is completed within the same calendar day, except where the
timetable does not permit, in which latter case the journey must be
completed on the next available service.

Which is interesting as I didn't know if I go from Maynooth to Blackrock say, I can get off in town and have a few pints.

Yes you can. As long as the journey is classed as an intercity journey you are entitled to break your journey for lunch or whatever.

Note that if you book on-line, you can only travel on those services that you select. Using a different service may result in a surcharge - make sure you get your ticket endorsed at the booking office when using any train, but the one you are booked on.

I've tried to do this before and been told "oh it's OK to get the <later train>" by the ticket agent... what is their basis for doing this? I doubly confirmed it with her, but I was still uncomfortable feeling that one might have difficulty convincing a ticket inspector.

Did I just get a ticket agent who didn't want to be bothered processing the ticket?

On another occasion it was just an extra €6 - small change for the convenience, though I didn't have a seat booked on the later service then.

Lazy Differently work-orientated staff member. :)

Just make sure it gets endorsed by the ticket office.

According to the wording of the rules you can even overnight wherever you decide to break your journey if there are no later trains to continue your journey the same day and as long as you get the next available service to continue your journey.
