I'm far from a Sinn Fein supporter but I'm not sure what he stood to gain from standing in a country that A) he doesn't want much to do with, and B) that doesn't in general rate him highly.

OP, what the fcuk is the point of starting a stupid thread like this?

WHY would big Ian-oh want to be president of a country he hates?

Thats like asking if Obama should be president of Iran for Christs sake.

    He is experienced
    He Hates the Church
    he can work with anyone
He will stand up to the Government

He would have been the ideal candidate

OK slightly OT, but these type of posts annoy me. There is extremely little that a President can do to "stand up to the government". Ditto all the nonsense about job creation, the economy etc.

He'd have my vote, if only because a papal visit would hqve been a laughriot

He's as much right to run for president as the other foreigners that ran in this election.

Still a better option than Gallagher

She is still from Derry, just as Alf is from outer space, living in the US doesn't make him a Yank.

And how do you describe our current president?

British but I don't hold it against her. Many thousands of Irish work in Britain so there's no reason British people should be denied positions here. :)

Mostly because I was bored and this is AH?

I felt the Boxers versus Y fronts debate had been done to death....

Unionist explains all you need to know OP. They are British Unionists. Its nonsense to suggest they run for president of Ireland.

Its like Gerry Adams running for Head of a British Secular State (if the UK became a Republic). Its against everything they both stand for.

She's not British; she's an Irish citizen. So are Dana, notwithstanding her London birth, and McGuinness. And Norris, of course.

It may surprise you, but anyone born in the 6 counties can decide for themselves if they are British or Irish.

it'd be interesting having a president of this country who hates it almost as much as most of the people on this forum.

Its not a non-sequiter. Theres no difference in me playing in the world cup for Brazil and a person from Northern Ireland being president of Ireland.

In this case it's not being pedantic; it's simply being correct. Sorry 'bout that.

I thought Paisley was with the DUP and not the UUP  Still the man is more credible than any Fianna Failer or Sean Gallagher; you know where you stand with Paisley and he will not try lie to your face and deny everything.

As far as I am aware Ian Paisley never killed anyone, nor did Martin McGuinness for that matter.
