Atheist Voting

Just curious if anyone else spotted this or experienced the same thing, or was it just a one off thing. I have only heard one person tell the story and I am not big on anecdotes :)

A user on the Atheist Ireland forum described going to the presidential election voting in Ballinteer. They accepted his driving license as ID and while presenting it he noticed that every desk has a bible on it.

He asked why this was and was told that anyone who does not present an ID could talk to the superintendent who... once satisfied as to the persons identity... would ask the person then to place a hand on the bible, swear upon it and thus be able to vote.

The obvious question was asked as to what an atheist would do in this case and the answer came that they would not be allowed vote under those circumstances.

The user also claims that The Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government confirm that Bibles are used in polling stations in two circumstances: (i) affirming your identity; (ii) affirming that you need someone else to mark your ballot paper on your behalf.

MOD NOTE: The above post moved from a new thread to here.
