De-badging Cars...

Why do people do this? Do they think that the handful of horrible modifications that they have made make their car so unique that it should no longer be subject to the badge of the manufacturer?

Drives me mad because 100% of cars look worse without the badge

Taking the badge off the boot of some cars looks quite nice, IMO.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,222 ✭✭✭robbie_998

seems like some people like to collect them as trophies in their rooms

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,223 ✭✭✭Nissan doctor

I wish all I had to worry about in my life was people taking the badges off their own cars.

De-badging cars, especially high end or high performance versions of a car is much cooler then prancing around showing off what you have.

Somtimes cars look cleaner and less cluttered at the rear when it's done.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,753 ✭✭✭qz

Different strokes OP, and it totally depends on the car.

You're using the wrong term IMO. De-badging refers to the removal of the model designation in most circles. Emblem or badge delete refers to removal of the manufacturers emblem/badge.

Few cars look good with the manufacturers emblem removed, many look much better with the model designation removed.

If I ever get the M5 I want the first thing I'd do would be debadge it...and stick a 520d badge in its place.

Then sit back and wait for someone to post it in this place about a fake M5 kit:pac:

As mentioned previously in the thread, it really depends on the car. Some models can look better with a bit of de-badging, but on some cars it can just look wrong.

    I'm talking about a 00 Bora now and not a M5 ok? :)

    What about something like that?

In Germany most high end BMW/Audi/Merc owners select "without symbols"

In Ireland most low end BMW/Audi/Merc owners select "without symbols"

I guess we still have an inferiority complex...

    Beat me to it.

Too bad the new ones are easier to tell apart than the old ones.... even without the M badges. But there's nothing quite like a good Q-car.

But maybe he's got only 0.7 there, and only visual mods ;)

I build a turbo charged B16 v-tec civic for a lad a couple of years ago and he put 1.4i badges on the back when it was finished!

I often see an Audi RS6 driving around near work with no badges on it at all too.

Didn't we reveal recently that there was a real slow Poland only version of the cinquecento? :D

    Of my cars that I've either had de-badged or bought de-badged;

    Audi A3 2.0fsi - 2.0fsi removed (ordered it myself)

BMW 530i No 530i badge (removed myself)

BMW 745d No 745d Swiss car ordered by
    original owner

I never really thought about the cleaner look I just didn't want to give off the I spent a little more to get a bigger engine.
The Germans remove badges as wealth can be a touchy subject.
A true enthusiast can tell the difference otherwise your just showing off!
Back in Dublin I see 520i badged as 540i (they have different grills) and total idiots who have tarted up diesel e60's to look like m5s and putting in grills etc without the right mirrors!
The devils in the details as they say!

Depends on what cars your talking about now. Some poor misfortunes are better off not to have their name to some.

But i totally agree with you as in my De-Baddgers post a few months back. Also i was saying this to someone on wednesday by chance your not the same human?:pac:

Meh, my Polo is "debadged", looks better without it. I'm by no means trying to say it's something it's not!

I've no front Honda badge, nor do I have 'Civic' on the back...instead I have a Carbon Fiber Honda badge on the back and the original SiR badge too. Looks much better IMO

I knew a guy who's brother removed his GTi badge from his golf as he was sick of lads trying to race him. It was a lovely car in gloss black and perfect condition, real class act too removing the badge and just enjoying his great car.

My E38 was factory de-badged. I re-badged it about a year ago, pretty much to see what it would look like and I liked it. Then I changed my mind and took it off again, I like the clean look.

When i got my first car, first thing i done was attacked the boot badges with a butter knife so stick that in your pipe and smoke it OP :pac:

I put one of every badge on my car. It looks awesomes.

    Horses for courses

You know what your car has, and that's all that matters at the end of the day!

I know of a guy who put a diesel badge on the back of his mid-90s astra estate to avoid drawing unwanted attention. I mean who in their right mind would want to rob an opel astra estate...

I think there's something tasteful about having an M3 without an M3 badge or an R32 without the R32 badge, etc.

99% of cars look better without the rear model/engine size badging. Most manufacturers use horrible fonts in their badging that don't suit the style of the car at all.I have de-badged my last 3 cars and will continue to do so no matter what car i own,the only cars i can see myself leaving the badges alone on are a vintage car and a super car.

De badging really goes against the Irish mentality of 'look at me' i'm so better because my passat is a 2.0 tdi and yours is only a 1.9 :D who gives a shot??

Like "stickerbombing"... but badge bombing instead. funny thought...

Someone was at me to stickerbomb parts of my passat, i thought that would be very stupid, but after some whiskey I decided I'd "lizard bomb" it.... by putting lots of small plastic lizard air fresheners in a rear window. Same person said "ah you can't do that it's stupid".... may well be stupid but it was only as a joke and , to me, more interesting than a load of random stickers

Oh and i should also add that i saw an 11 merc in white with very large wheels parked in the disable parking section at the crescent shopping centre in limerick, with the correct disable pass thing displayed, and on the rear bumper it had a sticker with a wheelchair sign and "this is how i roll" written on it. I found it very funny at the time.

A work associate has a 2003 Hyundai Sonata which he debadged.

Then he bought and fitted Jaguar badges and wheel trims to it :D

It’s a catch 22. I think is really cool when you see hi end model with the badge delete on it. They know they got a class car and don’t want to make it obvious and anyway fellow enthusiasts will know what it is!!

However on more mundane models it’s a bit tricky. I’ll use myself as an example I have a B8 Audi A4 2.0TDI 120 bhp. I love my car but in the scale of things it’s the lowest powered diesel in the range. I have been tempted to remove A4 & 2.0TDI from the boot for aesthetic reasons. What stopping me is that when I see it done to more mundane motors I think – you aint foolin nobody with that caper !!

( slightly off topic but what really boils my blood – and I know its trivial but it still gets to me is fake badges RS4 TDI, E350 badge on a E200 etc !!!)

To turn the question on its head for a minute - why would anyone actually want to have the cubic capacity of their engine written on their bootlid?

Because this is Ireland and your cubic capacity is as important as how current your reg year is,doesn't matter how low the spec is. :D

I love debadging. There is nothing on the back of skyline. And it is 400hp.

I am always toying with idea of putting primera badge on the back of it. Let them think I am ricer :D

My 550i is being ordered sans badge. The sales guy told me most high end 5s are sold with the badge delete option ticked.

I'm suprised people haven't started putting their motor tax rate on the back of the car. "Oh look - a €104 car! Oooo, I'm soo jealous. Best trade my monster in."

People with lower spec models de-badge to feel better , higher spec models to stop getting robbed

About 2 years ago, a friend of mine had a Civic and it was debadged front and rear. We were out talking one day and my Fathers peculiar friend was standing there looking at it.

    He said

"I must know, why is it that you go to all the effort of removing the badges, and then go on to have the Make/Model written across the sunvisor?"

T'was fairly funny at the time :L

I've debadged all my cars. I like them debadged.

i think id be more proud of a '€1566 and worth it' badge , a €104 badge is like having a swastika on your car in my book
