Hi petrol/diesel heads...just looking for an opinion on a 2008 Ford Fiesta 1.4 Diesel. Have an offer up north from a reputable garage so it'll cost me about €6800 including VRT, motor tax and the price of car...what do y'all think? car has 50K on it, 6 month guarantee, and will be serviced before I take. My gut is screaming yes but I'm just seeing if anyone has experience of this car....

50K miles is very high for that year of car.

    Mileage high?
If its early 08 that's only about 13k a year.

Thats not mad high... i was doing 20000 miles a year just on a 36-40 mile round trip to work most days. and the odd trip to far corners of the country and around home a fair bit.

yeah I'm not unhappy with the mileage. the car doesn't look knackered and it's a diesel so the engine is the last thing to be affected by miles. feels sturdy driving. no tracking problems. good accelaration and no rattles. nippy. think i'm in love....

If you don't buy it soon, I will!!!

I've been watching these all year, and I can say for definite you're getting good value. Go for it!

hurrah...there's two by the way. the second one has a couple of scratches but fixable so will let you know where they are when I've got mine sorted! it's blue by the way and slightly less miles being exactly 50k. mine was 53 and is black :)

Are you serious? It's an almost 4 year old diesel car, some people do buy them for the entended purpose of driving them, not just because they are cheap to tax.

OP, what sort of annual mileage are you driving? If you are doing low mileage then I don't see the point in buying a diesel car. You would probably buy a similar petrol Fiesta cheaper than a diesel model.

the reason why i'm getting a diesel again is because i do a lot of driving. i have fieldwork for my phd which is an 80 mile round trip and my parents live 120 mile round trip from me. i also have to drive to dublin occassionally for the phd and my doctor is up the north (long story) so that's another load of miles. I started driving my current diesel in May 2010 and to date I've done nearly 20000 miles. I just cant justify buying a petrol particularly as the road tax for the fiesta is so low! so...dunnannanaaaa I bought it today...it is a good deal and a great little car which will fit my purposes and it doesn't have low profiles thank god. although my little diesel at the mo has only had one puncture since i got it.

so for other poster who was interested in a similar car, it's the charles hurst budget direct car place on the boucher road. no hard selling and a good name....

Fair enough you seem to be doing enough miles to justify a diesel car and best of luck with it but just as a fyi a 08 Fiesta 1.25 petrol also costs €156 to tax. Most small cars in this size where cheap to tax when the new system came in.

Just as an additional note though, motor tax is a small part of the cost of car ownership yet the Irish put so much emphasis on it these days. Initial purchase price, maintenance and depreciation all cost alot more than annual motor tax.

Come here lads, forgive me if I'm a bit slow, but why is this thread "Thread of the Day"?

Was it just picked by one of the admins?

Doesn't seem to have much views, so i doubt it goes by viewcount.

    WHAT?

I'd be checking everything about it to make sure it wasn't clocked.

The mileage is low for a diesel (not suspiciously though really)

OP where is the north is it for sale?

The reason I ask is my g/f's family always advises to head as north as possible for a good protestant car that's been properly looked after and not run on washed diesel. They are from Newry.

It's a stereotype I know, but from observation it tends to be true

Just fyi, leaky injector seals are/were a common occurrence on those engines.
If you smell fumes in the cabin and hear puffing in the engine bay then that would be a giveaway. Probably less likely to be a problem on later cars like yours, but one to keep an eye on while you are in warranty period.

Those fiestas are good cars, look after it and it will return the favour, happy motoring!

    thanks for all the replies...

I have read about the injector seals and hopefully it being an 08 car they fixed this problem before release but I am aware.

Had the clocking convo with my dad...after that report where 60% of cars imported from the north are clocked was released...but the car doesn't drive like it's even done 50k. it's so smooth and has lovely acceleration. also the name of charles hurst and the fact that they are dealers and can check for the clocking.

the road tax is €100 which is so much better than my 1.7 diesel i have currently at €475 so it is rather important to me! and diesel is much cheaper than petrol with better mpg...yeah i'm so excited...it's costing €6322 in total including all taxes. a similar car but a 2006 was priced at €7000 in west dublin from a dealer...getting my car on 10th Nov...

p.s. dunno why it's thread of the day but well chuffed now :)
