UPC Welcomes You

I was strongly thinking of changing from Eircom to UPC - until I read the following in UPC's conditions:

UPC will configure all UPC mailboxes, email size limits, mail storage time and inactivity time limits.

UPC cannot guarantee that you will be able to register and use any e-mail address that you would like.

If UPC requests that you change your e-mail address you must comply within the time frame specified by UPC at the time of the request. Failure to do so will result in the removal of the e-mail address and all e-mail contained within that mailbox will be permanently lost

If the e-mail address constitutes the primary mailbox and the changes to the user name are not carried out within the timeframe specified by UPC at the time of the request, your account may be suspended or disconnected. Upon suspension the account will only be reinstated following receipt of a signed letter confirming the new user name that you wish to use.

Please note that UPC reserves the right to filter, block and remove incoming and outgoing email without notice.

UPC may also limit the number of email messages a user is able to send or receive in a given time period.

My sister a few years ago found that she was being constantly told by UPC that she had reached the limit of emails she could have in Outlook Express and that she could receive no more until she cleared her emails.

I'm with Eircom and have had thousands of saved emails in my Outlook Express and have never received a word of warning from them.

I've changed my mind about UPC. Sounds too restrictive for me! :(

Absurb and untrue. UPC can't tell what you have on your computer, anything on Outlook Express falls into that category, so some part of that story about your sister has been misconstrued/exaggerated/made-up (not necessarily by you).

The terms and conditions in question refer to UPC's own email service (@upcmail.ie if I'm not mistaken)

They are saying that if you use the UPC mail service they will restrict how much you can store on their servers, as long as you move it off their servers when you reach the limit (i.e. to Outlook or something similar) they couldn't care less.

The restriction on "any email you like" means they don't guarantee to provide with [something obscene here]@upcmail.ie

Though yes, they really should explicitly say it refers only to UPC's own email service (call customer care if you want, love to see if they know!)

This is a non issue as it only applies to their email, most people use gmail.

With regards your sister, she probably had Outlook configured to leave mails on server. You either weren't using a Upc email address or had delete from server when downloaded.

It isn't a major panic, UPC seem to have small size limits but I use gmail so no problem :)

I sent an email to UPC Customer Services yesterday specifically asking them if I could use my Eircom email address if I changed to UPC. Let's see what they say.

My sister is not a techie person and was using the Outlook Express default settings and WAS informed by UPC (I think it was Cablelink then) that she had to empty her inbox because she had reached a limit. She simply changed to Yahoo for her mail.

I see that others have had problems using their Eircom email address after changing to UPC:

'Bealtine' in this post confirms what I suspected (that you can't SEND from an eircom.net address):

UPDATE: As I was typing this reply I got a phonecall from UPC saying that I COULD retain my eircom.net email address. Apparently years ago you couldn't but some authority declared this illegal and stopped that restriction. He also said that years ago there WERE restrictions on the amount of email data you could retain, but nowadays that restriction doesn't apply. The current UPC 'Conditions' I posted originally do look very worrying though:

UPC will configure all UPC mailboxes, email size limits, mail storage time and inactivity time limits.

Please note that UPC reserves the right to filter, block and remove incoming and outgoing email without notice.

    Do you agree?

Personally I just prefer using Gmail, it suits my needs much better and I don't often use UPC email these days.

No, the UPC conditions refer to their own email service, there is an issue where you use their smtp address to send emails through. Haven't configured my email in a while but fairly sure that's the case.
The removing email and blocking specified is that if your pc has a virus or something like that and it is been used to spam people they may block outgoing emails. The removal of emails is I there are known to be spam.
If not using UPC mail then u don't worry about any of the above

Thanks for the replies, folks. Things at UPC are obviously not as dire as the prophets of doom predicted. :)

Limit on outgoing mails is to prevent spammers. And the Upc mail server from being black listed

    I see. Thanks. :)
