Does anyone have advice on where myself and a few mates could try a day at downhill mountain biking?

If you have to ask that question i assume you are not a mountain biker already! In which case i would go for something a little milder at first. Try the trails out in Ticknock.

    Where are you located hardibuck?

Ballhoura on the Cork/Limerick boarder has several pourpose built trails of differing lenghts/difficulty.

i wouldnt just jump into downhill if i where you, start of with xc and then after a while try it, irish DH can be a bit extreme if your just looking to start out, theres no real beginners level to it unfortunately

Jump into downhill! Nice pun Icy Sean!!
I don't think you just start downhill riding, you kind of work up to it I suppose. I also don't know anywhere where you could hire a downhill "rig", man :), unless you go to Whistler or Morzine or somewhere like that.

Go to a few races first have a look at how the lads (and lasses!) are riding and what they are riding. In the meantime just go to the local trail and ride like you stole it!!

unintentional pun for the win :D op just go to some place like ballhourras, you will have great craic and wont die to the same extent as if you where irish downhilling :p

the one thing that annoys me about our DH scene is there is no real beginner or stepping stone trails, at least from what ive seen anyway

There will be a Winter league series in the new year in Moneyscalp, and the track is a nice introduction to DH in Ireland, you should give it a go. http://irishdh.com/index.php/news-mainmenu-2/1-latest/368-2012-winter-league-dates

Some of the other downhill tracks are grand for intermediate riders, and they have uplift days where you can take your time to get to know a track without being in a race situation. Generally if you keep an eye out on IrishDH there are details of these uplifts and races.

Thanks for the replies lads. Pity about there being no beginners way in to DH. Ballhoura and Moneyscalp seem to be good options though. Think we'll just go on the beer this weekend instead :D
