Posted in the Beauty forum for added effect.

Not too sure if this is the right place to post/ask, but over the years I have had dry facial skin in the winter, oily skin in the summer. I have just been using Boots Mens moisturiser daily/every second day but it leaves a terrible oily greesy look on my face so stopped using it the past week. But now this morning after my walk into work, kinda cold out, my forehead, nose are so dry looking and my beard is dry too(i'm a dude).

So I am wondering if anyone here could recommend to me what products I should invest for the winter months that doesnt make me look like a greesy mess, and something for the summer too.

Having a beard is a bit difficult as skin gets very dry around my mouth and chin area too after a show in the morning, I dont use anything in it tbh. New to all this skin stuff so would you recommend that I maybe drop into a department store in Dublin and speak to someone to get advice on what to use as they might be better to advice products seeing my face (lol).

Price, of course, is going to be a factor on what I invest in, but any advice is very much appreciated!

Dont know if this is clear at all, so apologise if its not redface.gif

    Thanks for any help!

can't help you too much OP but FYI there are differences in moisturisers - i.e. some are far thicker/heavier than others. I'm a gal so it's different but I use light moisturisers. Thicker ones can make my skin oily. I don't know how serious this problem is - i.e. a bit oily, really oily etc - maybe talk to your doctor or a dermatologist if it's the latter

    Thanks for the reply!
Nah its nothing serious at all, just dry skin.

I guess I am better to drop into Arnotts or Debs and ask for some advice and be prepared to be flogged a load of stuff in one go lol.

    Thanks for that!
Must have a look in Boots tonight. I also used to use the Boots face scub but have found that its great but does strip my skin of all its oils so I only used it once a week.

Will look into LOréal face washes too.

hey dude - had exactly the same problem myself, especially the sides of my nose and top lip, really read and flaky, and seems to go in cycles - nothing - little bit red - very red and sore - flaky - nothing

Anyway, started a new regime six weeks ago and it seems to have really helped: Aveda All-Sensitive Moisturizer which is really light and works really well, and a cod-liver oil tablet once a day.
I have to tell you - the results have been remarkable - my skin is perfect now, did go a little red the other day, but didn't get any worse and got better very quickly.

It all depends on how sensitive your skin is, I've used tonnes of different moisturisers because my skin reacts to almost everything.
There are a lot of generic ones that work way better than branded stuff and theyre a lot cheaper.
Stuff like Aqueous BP,Silcocks Base, Diprobase. Elave(branded) is also a great one.

OP - don't bother going to a department store unless you're planning on leaving a serious wad of cash behind. Ask in any pharmacy if you want advice, they'll have the same level knowledge, if not better.
If it's not bad, I'd go with something simple like e45 face cream. It's basic, cheap, and works. Can be used all year too.
There's a new Neutrogena one out called multi-defence that seems to be really good. It protects against wind, central heating, cold and sun. As far as I know it costs around a tenner.
No need to shell out a fortune, trust me :)

Had much the same. On cold dry winter days my cheeks would dry out and I'd have skin flaking out. Dry, white and scaly and a five minute walk in the cold and I'd be bright red

    Exfoliator in the morning
And the L'Oréal moisturizer is a great product. Neutrogena is also good
Doesn't solve it completely but it went a long long way

E45's stuff is incredibly good and you use it so sparingly that one bottle/tub can last for months, so is great value.

If you get dry skin make sure what you are washing your face with isn't going to dry it out as well. Use something like this shower gel for washing your face rather than soap or a normal shower gel. http://www.niveaformen.ie/products/sensitive.html#!product19394/ << That stuff is actually really good.

Have you tried drinking more water? Regarding products I find Aveno (available in most chemists) to be fairly good.

1st - is your skin dry or is it dehydrated?
    Dry = Lacking oil.
    Dehydrated = Lacking moisture.

If it feels tight, looks shiney, fine lines and has a dimpled apperance it's dehydrated, and that's why you might find that some moisturizers for dry skin are too greasy.

    Dry Skin:
    - Cleanse (foam wash/gel/cream cleanser)
    - You can tone but if you're one of those guys that aren't into that, cold water works the same. Splash it on, and let it dry naturally.
    - When your face is completely dry, apply your moisturiser.

1-2 times per week - use an exfoliater (it'll have beads or grains in it. Slightly abrasive. Do not use this more than 1-2 times a week even if it says suitable for every day use).

If you have sensitive skin - avoid exfoliators with beads and go for exfoliation peels or AHAs.

Include more vitamins a + e into your diet.

    Dehydrated skin:
Follow the above skincare routine, twice daily, and use a moisturiser for dehydrated skin as it will contain a humecant which helps draw moisture from the air.

Drink at least 2 litres of water per day - only 2% of 2 litres will actually get to your skin. Even less if you drink alcohol/caffiene.

Avoid (too much) caffiene and alcohol.
Reduce the amount your around central heating or air conditioning.
Avoid heat treatments like really hot showers or saunas.

The products I would recommend for you would be Dermalogica. It's expensive, sure, but worth every cent. There's no point skimping on skin care. A lot of drugstore brands can dry out skin more (even the ones for dry skin) and strip the skin of any natural oils. The likes of sishedo, Dior ect are pretty expensive but really, they're not amazing. If you really need to do it on a budget, I'd recommend Simple. Keep away from the likes of nivia, garnier, ect.

    Hope it helps a little

Using an SPF or barrier protection -- it helps protect the skin from the elements. Give it a go and see if it helps you this winter :)

If you use shampoo and hot water on a daily basis, chances are you're drying out your skin in the shower. You should be able to keep your hair and beard quite clean without regular use of shampoo just by giving it your scalp and beard a decent massage in lukewarm water. It will feel comparatively greasy for a few days because you're used to stripping away the natural oils with shampoo, but give it a week or so and see if you notice an improvement.

Lads Im not clued into the man grooming so could do with a bit of advice.

I have sensitive skin, very dry facial skin, large pores a good portion of the time and occasional red blotchy cheeks and a very pale complexion.

I dont use any potions or lotions.

What do you recommend for a healthier look? Specific brands would be appreciated if your recommending something.

if you have large pores its naturally an oily skin and dry sensitive sounds like whatever your washing your face with could be drying/dehydrating it out,if you are using a soap it will do that, in turn making it sensitive,if so invest in a cleanser
use a cleanser then moisturise with bio-oil just a few drops at night to build back up the protection, and just water wash it in the morning,

not sure if im allowed advise the above but pm me if you want

dont use aqueous cream or silcocks base on your face. too much paraffin in it. grand for the body but not the face. i use loreal men expert products for the face and seems to work fine. you know your own skin best so experiment until you find the one that works best for you.

Never knew there was a difference between dry and dehydrated skin.

Never knew there was a difference between dry and dehydrated skin.

yep dry lacks in oil - dehydrated lacks in moisture

removal of oil usually caused from harsh soaps causes dehydration ie no oil barrier to seal in moisture thus causing sensitivity easily fixed though...
