Be careful with eircom. You have to ask them the actual speed you can get. I rang them last week to get broadband and they said I could get 8 mb next gen. I asked her to check my line and she said the mist I would get out of the 8 would be 4mb. Because of the line coming to my house

24mb is more than enough for gaming and streaming.

Magnet also run zero contention lines - so you won't be sharing - enjoy.
Lucky git - I am stuck with 2M with contention - not much fun. :(

I have the Eircom 24mb package but the most I ever get is 9mb.Just make sure to check what you can actually get.If you pay for the 24 and you will only get 9 or 10mb why not save the money and go for the 8mb option

I've got UPC's 30mb Broadband, think the line is a 12:1 contention ratio.
I generally get about 70-75% of that though in all honesty. That's probably due to UPC's strained network and the 12 or so devices i have running though.

I stay away from Eircom simply due to that ridiculous line rental fee they insist on charging everyone.

If youve no phone line in the house then theres no way they can guarantee what speed youll get. I work for a telephone company and the only way of knowing what speed you will get it by chevking AFTER the line has been connected, meaning youll automatically be in a contract. My advice... forget Eircom and see if UPC is in your area.

.......... and just to clear up, I dont work for UPC so I'm not trying to advertise here or anything, but their speeds speak for themselves. Just be prepared to deal with crap customer services... but most companies are the same in the respect anyway

I was with o2 and happy with the service apart from gaming. I got Eircom 8mb installed a few months ago for that very reason. The 8mb is enough for any game I wanted to play. the charges I was told on the phone were €55 a month but they did charged me €75 with hidden charges and no calls. Expensive but with no real cap to worry about I would have to recommend it.

Pings and no packet loss are more important than download speeds for gaming. 1MB DSL would be better for gaming than 5MB mobile "broadband"

OP, try and see if UPC are available in your area. If they are not go for Eircom or one of there resellers (Magnet, Vodafone fixed line, UTV, etc...)

UPC connections generally have better ping times.

Pings are irrelevant up to a certain limit.

Magnet are not an Eircom reseller in general, they provide their own fibre connections which are better than UPC if can be got.Yes they also sell a better eircom resale product too, just like the rest you mentioned.

This is false, they have better download speeds, nothing more.
