How many shots would an 18hcp golfer get in a 14 hole comp - run over holes 1-14?

Would he just get 2 shots on the lowest 4 indices played?

AFAIK its the same as if you are playing 18 holes - one on index one etc.

You dont get an extra 4 shots for the 4 holes you are not playing.

Just guessing but I presume he'd have a handicap of 14?

    14 Holy Driver ... 18 X (14/18)

    If u were off 20 and a 12 hole comp it would be 20 X (12/18)

You just take the shots as they come so you will have 1 shot on every hole. Same as and 18 hole comp.

If you were off 20 and index 1 or 2 was on holes 15-18 its tough.

Correct me if I am wrong but I think that is incorrect. If he was off 20 he would have a handicap of 16 (20*14/18) for a 14 hole competition.

Therefore he would have a shot on every hole and 2 shots on the 2 highest indexes in those 14 holes. For example if indexes 1 & 2 are in holes 15-18 then he would get 2 shots on index 3 & 4.

    Open to correction.

No i think he is correct, the idexes decide if you have shots.
Same applies to 9 hole comps.

If you go by what you are saying he could be getting 2 shots(or a single shot) on holes he doesn't normally have them on because they are of higher index.

If for example you are a 4 h/cap and index 1 and 2 are not played on the day, should you now get shots on index 5 and 6 where you would never have them?

My own club has 13/14 hole winter league and you take the shots as they come.

    Fair enough.

So if the 4 handicapper is playing the 14 hole comp and he gets a handicap of 3. Then if indexes 1 & 2 are not played he is really only playing off 1 for the competition?

Bit harsh but sure that is the luck of it. I suppose this is why the club would have a 14 hole scorecard for these competitions?

    No.

There is no reduction in handicap or increase in handicap. You take the shots as they come.

If it's a 14 hole comp and indexes 1-4 are in the 1st 14 holes then he has 4 shots. If they are the last 4 holes he has no shots.

    it's just how they fall.

Most clubs rotate what holes they use anyway throughout the winter.

So there is no handicap reduction for a 14 hole competition? You get your whole handicap and if your index is in the holes not played, tough!

Sorry I thought you allocated your handicap to the number of holes you played.

i.e. a 9 hole competition you get 1/2 your handicap
12 hole you get 2/3 your handicap, etc.

I think it is adjusted for the number of holes along with the indexes, it would make it a farce other wise. if the index 1-4 were the 4 holes not in play a 18 handicapper has no reduction he still gets 14 shots but the 4 handicappers gets none where he should have 3. The indexes in out club are reduced to play over the 12/14 or 15 hole comp.

indexes change in our place for the winter, so for a 12 hole comp you get 2/3 of full handicap and the 12 holes are indexed 1-12.

Same here, indices are changed for the 14 hole winter comp.
    I'm off 20, so 20* 14/18= 15.55555,so in effect I'll be playing off 16.
So I'll still have 2 shots to par on 2 holes.
    Am I right?

We play off full handicaps for winter league. 13 holes. If i have extra shots on the 5 holes we dont play its tough luck.

We have a 14 hole card for the winter. Holes have different indexes to the usual 18 hole card. I play off 12 but for the 14 hole card I receive 9 strokes.

We have a 14 hole comp every wed for the winter in our club and the index of the hole says the same as for 18 hole comp...I'm off 9 and on the 14 holes we play I've no shot on 7 of them

If you play X holes then you get x/18th of your handicap on index 1- whatever your handicap works out as. Unless you are using a special card that the indices are changed for the number of holes in play.

I've never known it any other way in any club.

However from some of the above it appears that its different in different clubs, so I would advise the OP to check when signing in for the comp.

    Correct.
If, when you take 7/9ths of your handicap you have, say, 15 shots for a 14 hole competition, you get your double shot on the lowest index hole, which might well be index 5. You get the shot on the lowest index of the course in play, doesn't matter what the "not in play" holes are.

Thanks for all the responses. I have queried it and Russman is correct

I don't have much experience in this but my guess is that it depends on the course. At my club, the nines are indexed 'properly' in that front nine has all the even indexes, the (tougher) back nine has the odd indexes. If we play a short competition it's over 11 holes and that's 1-11 on the normal route.
    So that's index 18, 8, 6, 2, 16, 12, 4, 14, 10, 17 & 7.
Taking the shots 'as they come' on those holes doesn't significantly advantage or disadvantage any category enough to warrant a "complicated" fraction-based system or a alternative winter card for that short course IMO... causes enough headaches when you tell some players they are off 3/4 their handicap in a fourball :)

I previously played a short course @ Kilkenny one time and they had a different routing than normal so a special card was in play... can't remember if there was any fractions in use.

Anyway, I don't play enough winter competitions to care either way what system is in place.
