1st or 2nd Focal Plane

This has probably been discussed a thousand before.But im buying a new scope and I am wondering which is better having a reticle in the first or second focal plane.

Depends. If you don't use a rangefinder and shoot at unknown distances (Hunting), a first focal plane reticle lets you calculate range at any power magnification while a second focal plane reticle has a set ranging magnification. Some consider a first focal plane reticle to be too fine at low mag and too thick at high mag, while a second focal plane never changes, but how useful each is is more dependent on the reticle design than which plane it's in. It's largely personal preference at the end of the day. My S&B is first focal plane, and it suits me fine, but I'd have no objection to using a second focal plane reticle in another scope either. I'd just learn to use it differently, but over time, both will become automatic.

As its in the target forum i'd say its target orientated so second focal plane. There is no way you want to take the chance that a reticle will block out, or hinder your ability to clearly and effectively make out the target at long distances.

If its for hunting then i'll move the thread to there, and suggest to go with what Iwm suggested.

I'm more worried of it losing it's point of aim if magnification is changed.I've no experience of using a scope with reticle in 1st focal plane.

Personally, main benefit of a 1st FP is the larger reticle in low light hunting conditions.

First focal is as far as I know robuster, has no problems shooting to the same point at low or high mag. With a second focal you'll have a slight difference in POI between mag settings. These differences can be very small on good scopes.... but not always. That's why, for proffessional use first focal plane.
