We have just completed blockwork to 1st floor level and are now researching tiles/slates for the roof.

We like the appearance of the man made tiles that look similar to natural slate but don't really know much about them.
I'm just wondering if anyone here got something similar and what do you think of them?

1: what's in the Planning permission?
2: man-made slates from a reputable manufacturer are fine.
3: quality natural slates very expensive, however there is a a lot of rubbish around.

Tegral slates are crap:mad:. I had them installed on my house 4 years ago and a quarter of them have curled up at the edges and instead of a smooth flat slate finish, it looks like a pond with ripples on it. I called Tegral out to my house 2 years ago but their response was that I had to take a dozen slates off the roof and send them into Tegral to test them as they couldn't ascertain that they were Tegral slates. I was there on site in 2007, the day they were delivered and they were on pallets wrapped up in cellophane with "Tegral" plastered all over them. Unfortunately my builder ordered them and he had the receipt. Relations with him broke down badly during the build and so I couldn't get proof that the slates were Tegral from him.

As for testing the slates, well Tegral would be doing the testing and I'd have to rely on them. From my experience with them, they would deny that the slates were Tegral and I'd be left with the job of re-instating the missing slates from my roof.

Just in case you think I'm just one bad example, there are 5 house with a mile of me that have Tegral slates and they are all warping. I discussed getting together and engaging a Solicitor with these neighbours to seek recompsense from Tegral but in the end, the majority view was to just put up with it. I'm not in a position to take legal action on my own.

roofing over ten years and can recommend blue diamond slates far better sslate than thrutone and as for natural slate stay away from anything under 2euro as quality usually isnt great

I went with Tegral Rivendale and have to say I'm happy so far. They're only a year on the build so still relatively early.

The Rivendale is a better quality slate than the cheaper Tegral slates and is made to look like a natural slate.

I have about 1,500 blue Bangor slates, a bit bigger than A4 size. They date from the 1880s and have been stacked up in my back garden ever since the roof timbers were replaced and new slates put on about 12 years ago.

I'm surprised no one has nicked them yet.:)
