Which engine would you go for? As far as maintainence, poke and MPG are concerned. There both 90bhp. the HDI is used in peugeot partner while the TDI is in various VWs and Audi's

Both engines come in an array of hp outputs. I'd go tdi but it all comes down to how expensive the vehicle attached to it is and how well minded it is.

If both are serviced properly 6 of 1 etc,but lots of extra problems with HDI if not not well looked after.

It being a PSA engine, yes, yes it is.

The 16v one is used in Ford Focus, 2007 Ford Mondeo, Ford Galaxy, Ford C-Max, Ford S-Max, Volvo C30, Volvo S40, Volvo V50, and PSA cars. (list stolen from wiki, couldnt remember all the non PSA cars that used it)

Just for simplicity and availability of spares.
I'd consider other Diesels too it all comes down to value for money

That newish 2.0 HDI engine is class, never gives bother. The 1.9 TDI is great too but the HDI wins on drive ability, fuel economy etc. Its the more modern of the two.

The HDI wont feel just as urgent but the power itself is far more progresive in its delivery. VWs TDI tends to be very surgey in its delivery. That and the fact that the VW lump sounds like an old fishingboat under full steam against the tide is enough to put me off.

In fairness both engines are reliable and return roughly the same fuel consumption so its up to yourself. It all depends what its fitted to. Stand beside an old Pug 406 on tick over and its as smooth as you like. Stand beside a mid 00s Audi and I'd be embarrased to admit I spent all that money on something thats making such a God awful clatter :D

HDi would be my choice, nicer drive and the car it's in generally won't be overpriced like VAG stuff is.
