Can one vote tomorrow in the referendums yet still not vote in the presidential election?

Yes, you will be given all three ballot papers (four if you live in Dublin West) but you can spoil your vote on any or all of them. Just put a big scribble on the ballot paper to spoil it.

    Of course.

You can just spoil your vote for the presidency by putting a line through it.

Excellent, thank you for the advice. Why stop at a line through the vote to spoil it though.

Yes but I thought if I just didn't vote that they would give my preferences to candidates in a list order or something. Didn't wish to take that risk

If you don't vote, you're effectively voting for whoever wins.

When you arrive to vote you will be given ALL 3 papers. You do not just take the Presidential one, take all 3 and you must then place them in the respective ballot boxes. Do what you like to the paper.

There is nobody worthy of my vote to be fair.

I'm having trouble disagreeing, but I'll be voting to try to keep one or two of them in particular out.

On another note I lost my polling card, if I bring a load of ID and that I can still vote can't I? I mean my name is still on the list.

Respectfully disagree. You are voting "None of the Above".

Spoil your vote if you wish - that way it will be counted.

Still, I would wish you consider voting tactically to keep out your least favourite if they are a front runner.

You dont need the card at all. It just makes it very slightly easier to find you on the list and cross you off. As long as your registered, you will be on that list.

Bring ID regardless, one will do, as you can be asked for it, even if you do find and bring your card.

If our electoral system contained a "none of the above" provision, I'd agree. As it is, imagine a scenario where a candidate wins by a margin of 100 votes - if 100 people had voted for a different candidate, that candidate could have won instead.

If I vote for A and B wins, I can at least say I did my bit to try to keep B out. If I don't vote (or spoil my vote) and B wins, I can't even say that much.

    A question:

A few times tonight I heard different media say you have to mark your candidates 1 to 7.

Do you have to do this, or can you just put '1' and nothing else, or marl your '1,2,3' and nothing else?

Don't want to spoil my vote.

You do not have to mark the card 1-7. You can put only a number 1 if you wish.

You can vote for as many or as few of the candidates as you like, and don't worry too much about spoiling your vote, as long as your intention is clear they will still count it. So if you decide to vote for just one candidate, and x in the box beside that person will count the same as a 1. Obviously if it's not clear what your intention is then your vote will probably be spoiled (e.g. if you give more than one candidate the same number - although if you were to give one person your first preference, and 2 others a 2, then according to the returning officer in the Dublin count centre, they will count the first preference, but if they are eliminated, then your second preference would not be counted, etc).

    Your doing it right.

If you only want to vote for one candiadate, a '1' or an 'X' or a tick, beside the one you want will do. As long as its clearly marked.

If you want to give a 2nd preference, a '2' beside your next choice, and so on if you want to give a 3rd or 4th, all the way to 7 if you so wish.

They only say to go 1-7 to make the most of your vote, but tbh, with this crowd, most are finding it difficult to choose after their first few preferences.

When you get your ballot papers make sure they are stamped (punched in the corner with little holes). Sometimes the polling clerk forgets to do this and that means your vote is spoilt. This is really important - it doesn't happen all that often but it does happen so be careful.

If you aren't going to vote in one of the referendums or the Presidential election make sure to still put the paper in the ballot box. They all have to be counted so it messes things up if you just roll it up and stick it in your pocket.

Don't write "liar" or some such nicety beside the candidate you least like after you put your 1 in the box beside the candidate you like - you are running the risk of getting your vote spoilt. Save your rants for Boards.ie. Write nothing on the ballot paper except 1, 2, 3 etc

I personally don't understand why people would go the whole way down on the list.

There is no way in hell I would give Dana any preference. And a couple of others too.

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.

Then stick the ballot papers in a brown envelope and post to: Sean Gallagher
    C/O Fianna Fail National Executive.
    Galway Tent.
    Ballybrit Racecourse.
    Galway.

And slip a €50 note in to speed up the process ;)
