Can a Laptop just die for no reason? Toshiba

    Toshiba Satelite L450D

    Windows 7

Today installed iTunes update via Apple updates. Did not restart as suggested as I was in the middle of something, so closed the window asking to restart now/later and only just restarted it an hour ago. (it had gone on standby in the meantime when not in use).

All I get now is that windows cannot restart as it may be due to a software error or loss of power during restart (if I remember reading it correctly),
    and so asks:
    a. Launch Windows in Repair Mode (recommended)
    b. Launch Windows Normally

I clicked on A, and nothing happened. Im left facing a black screen with my mouse pointing on it.

I removed the battery pack to power down, and try a restart again but got the same, and nothing is happening.

Even tried the resume windows normally mode too but nothing happened.

Can anyone advise? Im lost without it:(

I'm not an expert by any means.. in fact that's probably the understatement of the year! but I had a Dell Windows Vista laptop a few years ago which I had countless problems with after running updates - 'Windows has failed to start'. I could normally repair it with the system cd which came with the laptop.

Your laptop will be fine, and you shouldn't have to reinstall Windows. I'm sure someone here can advise you as to why it happens, and importantly a fix. I never figured it out.

KSOD can be a NIGHTMARE!! I hate it. You can get lucky, and have a very easy fix, or unlucky and be at it for hours...

Can you boot into safemode? (Press F8 while the PC is booting up. Once a second, until you get a menu, saying, "Safe Mode", "Safe Mode With Networking" etc..)

    Reboot and press F8
Select "Repair my computer" then the keyboard and language, When you reach system recovery tools, select System restore. Choose the newest restore point before today.

Another Solution (Never worked for me, but has for many people)

Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc on the keyboard to bring up Task Manager.
Click File -> New Task (Run…)
Type explorer.exe and then press Enter.

    OR....

IF you can, go to Safe Mode With Networking. Download Revo Uninstaller (Trial Version)

    Uninstall your Graphics card.

Unistall iTunes, and All associated Programs.

Reboot. The graphics card should be autodetected and reinstall itself.

Try CopyTrans as an iTunes Alternative

@ allyall. How long should repair my computer take? I can get it to get to that stage and it even shows the loading bar then goes blank/black screen again.

It can take any length of time, that's being honest.. IF it takes 30 mins, then maybe stop it..

But try one of the other solutions in that post first.

I should have said, about Ctrl+shift+delete, do that when the cursor is showing on the black screen.

Honestly, any of these can be hit or miss.. Have you a CD that came with the Laptop?

Probably. But might let tech guys fix it before I end up losing everything!

    You won't lose anything.

All of your Data is there, if you want i can try talk you through it, i have no idea how much Tech Guys charge, but i would try a couple of solutions before paying even €20..

    Also Try This

    1) Restart your PC

    2) Logon and wait for the black screen to appear

    3) Make sure your PC should be able to connect to the internet (black screen does not appear to affect this)

    4) Press the CTRL, ALT and DEL keys simultaneously

    5) When prompted, Click Start Task Manager

    6) In Task Manager Click on the Application Tab

    7) Next Click New Task

    8) Now enter the command:

    "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" "http://info.prevx.com/download.asp?GRAB=BLACKSCREENFIX"

Note this command assumes that you are using internet explorer as your browser, if not substitute your browser path and file details for those of iexplore.exe or use the Browser option of Task manager to locate it.

    9) Click OK and your browser should start up and begin the download process

    10) When prompted for the download Click run, the black screen fix program will download and run to automatically fix the issue.

    11) Now restart your PC and the black screen problem will hopefully be gone.

    Another Solution (Will work 100%)

Is to download Knoppix and follow THESE instructions. IF the alternative is tech shop, This is most likely what they'll do.

Have tried all methods of rebooting but nothing being accepted. Keeps going blank or tells me windows can't start and to run repair mode. That brings me to a black screen too. :(

After trying all the commands, and various tips given here - nothing worked. Brought it back to PC World, and they told me HD was corrupted. So its in England somewhere getting a new Hard Drive.

They did offer to save my stuff, but being on the spot, I didn't think there was much worth saving as I thought all my photo's had been backed up on my External HD. Unfortunately only the shortcut appeared and not the photo's.

Lesson learned - the hard way - have lost all photos, and game files etc. :(

Another week or so and I should have my laptop back. Im still wondering what caused my HD to be corrupted...........

    Weird.

You were getting it to boot into windows, but only the cursor (White arrow) appeared, right?

Wouldn't have thought that was the hard drive.

Although, if you only did it today, ask them can you have your old hard drive back, with the laptop, and stick it into one of these - SATA CRADLE

    Worth a shot.

I would phone them and ask if they still have it. They may not ship it to England until Monday. If you're in Cork or Dublin I will back up your pictures for free. I hate to see people losing pictures. Every time i send a laptop out of here, I always advise my customers of an appropriate backup strategy.

Sorry guys, its already gone, gone and gone!! :( It was dropped off to PC world on 26th October, and they did offer to back up whatever I had, but at 40 Euro and hard pushed for cash I didn't think twice and said no. Of course its afterwards I found out that my pictures never transferred properly onto my external, as I never copied the folders within the software so it ended up being a shortcut to nothing:o

@Allyall, yes it was a black screen with just the mouse/cursor showing on the screen - no matter what I tried thats where it stopped at, even the command promt led it there after an attempted loading.

Why would they say it was a corrupted hard drive if it was something else?
