guys if someone seperates from partner leaving them in family home, nothing official in place, they want to claim tax relief over the past 2 years they've been renting. the mortgage on house hasent been paid since they left but they did recieve tax relief on mortgage before leaving, can they still claim rent relief for the years still or does the fact they recieve tax relief years ago stop them being being to do so???

The general rule , is that when your circumstances change , then so do your entitlement .

So when this someone left the family home and entered rented accomodation , their circumstances changed , and the person is entitled to claim private rent relief tax credit .
Whether the person gets a refund or not , will depend on all other circumstances taken into account during the tax year in question.

Each tax year is treated seperately , so previous year circumstances will not hinder a claim in following years .
